Ray Philpot Obituary

Ray was born to Mac and Sarah Philpot in July 1933 in Fresno, Calif., and passed away Monday, Oct. 18, 2010, in Grover Beach. Raised in Tulare, Calif., he graduated from Tulare Union High School and the College of the Sequoias, where he lettered in several sports and was Giant-of-the-Year in 1955. His participation in sports was a lifelong adventure. He was a recognized baseball umpire for high school and college in the 60s and 70s, where fans had no trouble hearing a strike being called. When he retired to the Central Coast, he was recruited by the Morro Bay High School as a volunteer golf instructor for the boy''s and girl''s team. His hobby was golf and he could be found at Dairy Creek Golf Course repairing divots or marshaling the course. On the two other days of the week, he hung out with the Seger group waiting for their tee time to be called. He was the official "Swing Doc" when spotted on the course, always willing to help anyone improve their golf game. Ray is survived by his wife, Virginia; as well as children Sharon Green, Dennis Philpot, Richard Philpot and Robin Long (Iran); and grandchildren Coleen Green, Kathleen Green, Katy Long, Ashley Philpot, Bryce Philpot and Megan Long. He is also survived by great-grandchildren Madyson and David; and siblings Jim Philpot (Geneva), Carl Philpot (Shirley), Billy Jo Anthony (Richard) and Peggy Henry (Harley). A memorial golf tournament in his honor will be held at Dairy Creek Golf Course. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either Santa Barbara County Hospice or Morro Bay High School Golf teams in his name.

coach philpot was the the most patient kind man ive ever met. Being one of the first girls to join the boys team he welcomed us with open arms and treated us with the utmost respect. Although he always taught us to be better than the boys :). i remember the first match we played in everyone thought we wouldnt make it with our heavy bags and walking the whole coarse, coach b even sent down david j in a golf cart to pick us up (which we refused!) and as we walked up to the clubhouse everyone clapped and cheered for us and coach philpot and coach b told us how proud they were of us. We also loved to bring cookies every match day and he definitely loved us for that! you will always be in my heart coach rest in peace.

I was so sad to hear of my friends passing. Ginger my last words with Ray were about you and how happy his life has been with you. I can't imagine the grief you must feel. He was a man who loved life and everyone he touched loved him. His smile was so infectous and all men should strive to have his character and warmth. I will miss him terribly and will cherish that he included me as part of his family. My prayers and love are with you always.

Ray spent more than a decade giving back to boys and girls from Morro Bay High School. He was the best golf coach one could ever hope to work with because he taught more than the mechanics. His genuine love for the hundreds of golfers with whom he shared his down-to-earth wisdom and gentle nature. He instructed the best players (Brian Wiggins and Leticia being a couple of his favorites)and the "rookies" with the same enthusiasm and patience.
He was my co-pilot on numerous CIF trips, my mentor when I needed guidance, and my surrogate father. We shared dinner after every match, and win or lose, he always focused on what went right and which golfer shined that day.
Ray, your presence will always be with me, and I can already see your smiling face whenever I hit a shot that the "Swing Doctor" helped me groove. I know you will be right there with me and many others who loved you as we try and keep our lives aligned and on the short-grass. Bless you Ray and bless all of your family and extended family as we all keep swinging through this Life the way you taught us.

Dairy Creek will never be the same without Ray around. I don't know if I ever met anyone who enjoyed life as much as Ray. If you were ever having a bad day and Ray walked in, it got much better immediately. I will always cherish our talks of golf and life and will certainly miss them in the future.

Uncle Ray had a very special place in my life. Being the oldest grandson, Dad the oldest brother, Ray was just 3+ years older than me. During my young years up to when Ray and I started raising families, I spent a lot of time at grandma's. Ray was my mentor and I wanted to acheive in sports as he did. However, I didn't have the talent of uncle. I played some baseball (as catcher) and golf. Just prior to Dad moving us to the bay area, I was going out for baseball and at the try outs, the coach looked at me a said "NOT ANOTHER PHILPOT". There is a big hole left where Ray was and I am so happy I got to spend a lot of time with him at the last family reunion.

I am saddened by the lost of a wonderful man... I always looked forward to the games that Ray would umpire back in the 70's... He always called a great game & made it extra special... As time moved on I remember playing golf with "Yack & Wack" as Ray would waste no time playing & even talk in his own backswing just so no one would interupt his concentration... Great Man & a Great Friend, I'm sure he'll have some pointers for us all when we see him again in heaven... My heart & prayers go out to his family & friends...
Yours truly, Steve Singleton

Once again Floyd is taking care of his little brother in Heaven. They're having quite a reunion I'm sure. Please accept our deepest sympathy for the loss of a great guy who always had a smile on his face. He loved life and we have sadly lost a gem on earth.
