Sister Mary Nessi

Sister Mary (Mary Theophane) Nessi A native of Oakland, California died at the Convent of the Holy Names, Los Gatos on October 23, 2010 at 90 years of age, and as a vowed member of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary for 71 years. She is survived by her sister, Sister Catherine Nessi, SNJM, and brother, Tom Nessi, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Mary Nessi, and her brothers, Joseph, Louis and Paul. She is remembered fondly by her beloved Sisters and Associates of the Holy Names. For the early part of her ministry, Sister Mary was an elementary and music teacher at St. Monica (Santa Monica), Marylrose (Oakland), Ramona (Alhambra), St. Anselm (San Anselmo), St. Mary (Los Gatos) and St. Joseph, St. Cecilia and St. Monica in San Francisco. Later she was librarian at Marin Catholic, Holy Names High School and music librarian at Holy Names University. For the last 24 years Sister Mary lived at Los Gatos engaging in retreat ministry, spiritual direction and support services. Sister Mary had a contemplative nature which she fostered with a deep life of prayer, enjoying the beauty of God's creation and reading spiritual books. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Thursday, October 28, 2010 at the Convent of the Holy Names, 200 Prospect Avenue, Los Gatos. Her burial will be at 10:15 a.m. on Friday, October 29, 2010 at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Hayward, California.
