Hillel Abel Obituary

Hillel S. Abel, MD, FACP A native San Franciscan and longtime Marin resident, was born on July 3, 1932 and died peacefully on October 23, 2010 with family at his side. Following Lowell High School, Hillel attended and graduated from Stanford University, a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity and the tennis team. Having also received his medical degree from Stanford University, he taught briefly at U.C. San Francisco before entering private practice. During a rewarding 46-year medical career in internal medicine, specializing in cardiovascular disease prevention, Hillel, also known as "Hillie" by colleagues and friends alike, spent almost all of his free time pouring through medical journals, playing tennis and running through Ross, Kentfield and San Rafael. Success to him meant enhancing the lives of his patients, many of whom became lasting friends. Hillel is survived by his loving wife, Frances, of 54 years, daughter, Lisa, son, Adam, adored granddaughter, Claire and brother, Steve (and his wife Joanne). He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held in Hillel's honor on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1:00pm at Temple Emanu-El, 2 Lake Street, San Francisco. In lieu of flowers, donations in Hillel's name are welcomed at Marin General Hospital, maringeneral.org and Organization of Rehabilitation and Training (ORT), ort.org.

Ah Dr. Abel; Ray Rosenman recommended Hill Abel to me 25 years ago. Dr. Abel was the most perspicacious, and discerning doctor I have known; he was the doctor of doctors. I shall greatly miss him; a candle shall be lit for you doctor this holiday season.

Dr. Abel was not only a fine doctor, but a wonderful human being. We so enjoyed his anecdotes and the pride he took in his family. He looked after my father John Hale for many years. He helped us in many difficult situations with grace, compassion and humor. Our deepest condolences to his family and Sherri.

My Father, Raymond Holtz, was a patient of Dr.Abel for many years.
I give credit to Dr. Abel for helping him maintain good health for
so many years. When my Dad was diagnosed with a debilitating illness and I became his caregiver, Dr. Abel was instrumental in helping me as his caregiver.Dr.Abel was always available to me and my Dad during a very difficult time. My condolences to his family and best wishes to his staff.

Dear Abel family: Hillie gave me my first job in the medical field. He was an amazing teacher and great man. I'll always remember his smile: his whole face lit up. He had a huge impact on my life, as I am still in the medical field, ten years later. I am sad that I will no longer see him anymore. He was such a blessing to the community. I witnessed, first hand, his miracles with medicine. I'm sure he will continue performing those miracles in heaven. My most sincere condolences to you.

Hillie was the first young man I looked up to. I was just a 5-year old kid living on Fillmore Street in the Marina district and Hillie was my 2nd-cousin. To this day, I keep a small, red-knitted sweater with the Stanford logo that Hillie gave me. I was Fran & Hillie's ring bearer 54 years ago.
Sad to hear of his passing. My thoughts go out to Fran, Lisa, Adam, Steve and JoAnne.
Fair winds and following seas Hillie, as you make your final passage of the Bar and head out to sea.
Love,

CM

Psalm 90:10 states, "In themselves the days of our years are seventy years, And if because of special mightiness they are eighty years..." Although Ms Abel lived a long life this does not relieve the pain that is felt by her loved ones. May our Heavenly Father give these ones strength and comfort through the Scriptures. Please accept my sincere condolences during this time of your loss.

Dear Fran and family,

I have been a patient of Dr. Abel since I arrived in California over 35 years ago. He was a mentor to me in many ways both physically and mentally.
He will be remembered daily for all of the coaching he has done for me and the disciplines he has taught me.I am sorry I will not be able to attend the memorial as I am in China on a business trip- staring at Dr. Abel's name on the the prescriptions which he provided me and engrained in me the disciplne to take them faithfully.
Thank you Dr. Abel. I will miss you.
Sincerely, Tony Marterie
