Emma Melissa Obituary

MELISSAEmma Melissa, passed away September 21, 2010, at the age of 101. Born April 1, 1909, in St. Teresa, Argentina, to Ernesto and Domenica Chiappero. They immigrated to the United States in 1911, making their home in Los Angeles. While helping her father in the poultry business, she met her future husband Guido Melissa. They were married March 31, 1927, and were blessed with son Robert and daughter Audrey. The family settled in the San Rafael area of Pasadena in 1950. Her strength of character and determination saw her through the unexpected death of her husband in 1960. Emma continued to work in the San Rafael Elementary School Cafeteria, retiring in 1971. The fact that Emma never learned to drive didn't limit her activities, relied on walking or the use of public transportation. She volunteered for 17 years at the Pasadena Convalescent Aid Thrift Store, receiving the "Volunteer of the Year" award in 1980. She continued to participate in the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program of the San Gabriel Valley, receiving Certificates of Recognition from the California State Assembly and State Senate as well as a Proclamation from the Congress of the United States House of Representatives for her dedicated service. She loved to travel, touring five of the seven continents. An avid reader, she was a frequent visitor to the public libraries, especially her neighborhood San Rafael Branch, brining the staff roses from her beloved garden. She was greatly admired for her quick wit and keen sense of humor. On the occasion of her 100th birthday, Emma was delighted and honored to receive personal greetings from Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard and President Barack Obama. Emma is survived by her son and daughter, a granddaughter, two grandsons; and 3 great granddaughters. "God's finger touched her and she slept." Buona notte Mom, Grandma, Grandma Nona.

Dear Melissa Family,

I was a student at San Rafael School in the mid 1960s and remember Mrs. Melissa well. She was quiet, and no-nonsense with us, but very kind. It was she, along with Mrs. Taylor, the cafeteria manager, who showed us the inner workings of the San Rafael kitchen, including the giant Hobart floor mixer; pretty fascinating to a third grader!
She also did something that we really appreciated: when there was something particularly good on the menu, a favorite dessert, or, best of all, Pizza Burger Pie, she would save extras for us which we'd pick up as we turned in our trays. Those small kindnesses were very special.
I never knew her other than as a student coming through the cafeteria line forty five years ago, but I was fascinated to read about the rich life she lead. We know so little about the people who work hard to care for us as we grow up, but her work and thoughtfulness at San Rafael made a difference in lots of children's lives.

Sincerely,
Matthew Wright
