Oh, Charlie, how Notre Dame and Saint Mary´s could use your common sense, beautiful Faith, and reasoning power today. These are terribly sad and confused times. Rest in the Peace if the Lord!

Charlie Rice, in addition to being a highly accomplished scholar, was a down to earth guy who was extraordinary in his generosity towards others. Over his career he helped countless people. I was the recipient of his acts of generosity and I will be eternally grateful for his counsel and assistance over the years. His family has so much of which to be proud. God bless you.

Dear Mary and family...Charlie was a one of a kind. He was a great teacher who influenced a whole generation or two of law professors. I will keep his memory alive in my own teaching where "Freddy Glotz" appears in lectures and exams regularly in Charlie's honor and memory. We worked closely on many projects- most especially on the Bengal Bouts, teaching religion at Marian High School (how did that happen??), soccer (his nephew, Jim, was my first soccer captain), coaching track (yes, track) together....... Even though we disagreed on politics (almost everything!!! ), we never once had a cross word... I am grateful to him for all he did for me... He was my role model as a teacher with Ed Murphy-- and my friend...We saw each other at ND one last time at our big soccer reunion... to Mary and the kids (his son is now at Seton Hall), I send you my love and my best thoughts... now let us praise famous men...
charlie was, inter alia, the first registered conservative in NY State to be elected to statewide office (c 1964). Charlie was a true and loyal friend then until now. RIP. Semper Fidelis---- and he was.

Colonel/Professor Charlie Rice was a courageous soldier of the Ecclesia Militans. I pray that, if he is not already a member of the Ecclesia Triumphans, he will be soon. He set an excellent example for the rest of us to follow. I will miss him and am happy to have had him as a friend. I hope to meet him again.

I only knew Professor Rice from watching his teachings on EWTN television. What a lovely human being. I am learning much more about him. I am happy to read of his large family. Truly he was a blessing to others. His students were enriched by his wisdom. My sympathy to his dear family. May he rest in peace now with the God he served so faithfully.

To Professor Rice's family,
Like many of Professor Rice's students, I came to ND law school with twelve years of Catholic schooling but little interest or understanding of the faith. I did not attend church except on Christmas and Easter, and I have the dishonorable distinction of having never once attended mass at ND despite spending three years there. And on top of that, I married a non-practicing Lutheran. Slowly, Professor Rice changed all of that. Over the years, and in his Jurisprudence class, Professor Rice pre-disposed me to come back to the faith, which I did shortly after returning to California. My wife later converted, and we have four kids -- with everyone going to church every weekend. None of this would have happened with Professor Rice. Since he died, I have been on two national satellite radio programs explaining what a great and influential person, who never seemed to judge anyone. Professor Rice was a giant whom I will greatly miss. My oldest son is at ND and just went to the pro-life rally in DC -- Professor Rice would have been proud.

My sincere condolences upon the loss of Charlie. We never met, but Charlie was extremely kind, and so open, in answering my concerned email questions about our Catholic faith in today's world, and at ND and SMC. He was a guide, and I was truly grateful. May he rest in eternal peace. And, may God bless his goodness.

Professor Rice was a wonderful teacher, a good man and a good friend and mentor. He taught me jurisprudence back in 2012, in my last year of law school. He loved Christ, loved Our Lady, loved Notre Dame, and loved his students. He never hated those who disagreed with him (in the university administration, pro-choice individuals, whomever), and would often tell us students who loved him to pray for them. While clearly a tough old former Marine with a razor-sharp sense of humor (he loved to poke fun of us students when we would goof up), there was a kindness, gentleness, and generosity to him that is really rarely seen. God bless this faithful son of Holy Mother Church. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

To the Rice Family:
Please accept our heartfelt sympathy. It was a great honor to be taught by Professor Rice. He was an excellent teacher, and more importantly, he was incredibly helpful to his students. We are grateful we had the opportunity to meet him and to learn from him. As a devout Catholic and extremely dedicated husband and father, he was a wonderful role model for his students. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
Sincerely,

I knew Charles ("Charlie") Rice from the first through eighth grades at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Elementary School in Forest Hills,NY, then at Regis High School, a Jesuit High School in Manhattan entrance only by scholarship, and was an altar boy with him at our church. Not only was Charlie number one in our grade school class , but on the grade school athletic teams he took the tough jobs. He played center and middle line backer on the football team and was catcher on the baseball team. His grit and determination were almost legendary even then. Charlie and I went our separate ways after junior high school year when I moved to Cleveland. Although he attended Holy Cross and I went to Notre Dame, we saw each other on occasion when I would visit the law school or attend ND college reunions. The accolades he receives are well deserved. I write because I want those who did not know him in the early years that even from age 6 to 16 he was a leader in every way. I send prayers and condolences to his family.

Professor Rice was a role model in so many ways. I knew him as a teacher when he taught my classes in Torts and Con Law in 1973-74. He was a legend in his own time even then: tough yet fair; gentle humor coupled with a rapier wit when needed; and true care for his students. May he rest in peace. Jim Lyons '76 (Irving, Texas)

I was in awe of Dr. Charlie Rice, he was commanding, passionate, compassionate, and caring with a towering intellect which was never arrogant or condescending. From the boxing room to the law school classroom, Charlie shared the best of himself to anyone who needed help. I was one of the thousands of students who he helped. God bless Charlie Rice, I know you have reached your ultimate goal.

Charlie Rice was a tower of strength in the RTL movement and will be greatly missed. A man's man, this Irish-Catholic ex Marine, brilliant, principled, faith-filled, fearless, energetic, effective, good-natured, likeable, humorous, is a model for all young men to follow. If each parish in America were blessed with a Charlie Rice in its congregation, this would be a totally different country. One of my greatest privileges is to have known this remarkable man. My deepest condolences to his wife and family. Charlie Rice.....RIP.

My deepest sympathy to the entire Rice family. May God grant you true comfort and peace. Professor Rice was a great man and the world is poorer for his loss. He taught me Torts, Con Law and Jurisprudence at Notre Dame Law School. Professor Rice had a lasting impact on my life. My parents taught me my values, and gave me the gift of Catholicism. Professor Rice helped me calibrate my moral compass, and years after NDLS, I still think of him frequently. We were blessed to know him. Prayers are with you!

I just found a picture of Dr. Rice and I at a conference when he was the 2010 Keynote speaker for the Society of Catholic Social Scientists. This was the caption I wrote under the picture.......
"I have been among some truly famous great faithful Catholic thinkers, philosophers, theologians!! This is a picture of me with the Key note speaker Dr. Charles Rice professor emeritus at Notre Dame School of Law. He gave the most stunning talk about teaching the truth of Christ as Catholic educators. I feel so blessed to be here!"......... I lift up his family and friends and I know that there is a celebration in heaven..( he's probably got them all spellbound with a prayerful lecture topic ☺. ) if the family would like me to send them the picture, let me know; I would be glad to. My email is [email protected]. God Bless. Dr. Suzanne Carpenter, retired Nursing Professor

Professor Rice -- a NDLS institution. How much I owe to him and his family for their support to a Marine going to law school years out of college. A brilliant man, with a great sense of humor and a ready wit and smile. He was just so HAPPY. I owe him so much, and am so sorry I let so long pass between calls -- I did not even know he was ill.
