John Glascoe Obituary

John L. Glascoe John Lenwood Glascoe, son of the late George Lewis Glascoe and Nannie Shanks Glascoe, born on April 9, 1914, departed this life peacefully at his home during the early morning hours of November 8, 2010.

John worked as a custodian at both the Ann Wingfield Elementary and Culpeper County Junior High Schools before retirement at age 65. Prior employment included positions of chauffeur, butler and cook at the Longlea Estate, Boston, Virginia; housekeeper for the Headmaster of Woodberry Forest, Orange, Virginia; private family aide for the then Congressman and Mrs. Lyndon Baines Johnson, Washington, District of Columbia; and personal aide to United States Attorney General, Tom Clark.

John was a member, deacon and trustee at Canaan Baptist Church, Reva, Virginia.

John was preceeded in death by his wife of 47 years, Dorothy Mason Glascoe; four brothers, George, Edward, Raymond and Howard; three sisters, Laura Strother, Lillie Rawls, and Myrtle Moore.

Survivors include two daughters, Joan Glascoe Payne Denchfield, and husband, Roger D. Denchfield of Reston, Virginia, and Arlene Glascoe-Jones of Culpeper, Virginia; two grandchildren, Jessica N. Payne of Montgomery Village, Maryland and Jeremiah A. Jones of Culpeper, Virginia; one great granddaughter, Aliciah N. Payne of Montgomery Village, Maryland; one sister-in-law, Katherine Glascoe of Reva, Virginia, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 11, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at Canaan Baptist Church, Reva, Virginia. The family will receive friends at 12 noon until the time of service. Interment will follow at the church cemetary.
