Dear Susan, Michelle, Michael, and David. I am so sorry to hear about Joels's passing, and for your loss.I had the pleasure of working with Joel for many years, and the opportunity to encounter independently each of you in different ways . Joel was a great teacher and inspired many, as he prodded others to look inward, with his trademark line: "Whose stuff is that?" I hope the knowledge that he is now freed from the ravages of illness help soften the pain of your loss. George

It was an inspiration to know Joel in his days of training for his black belt. He worked hard all the time, sometimes making me think my workout was going to be too much for him but he never stop putting out his best.
We pushed him hard, we demanded a lot from him. I wanted to see what he had, I was young and he was not and he always delivered.
I hope to have the spirit that gives me strength like his as I continue my journey through life.
I knew Joel through workouts and testing him and through that you can understand a lot about a person. This is why I love Cuong Nhu, it gives me a chance to know people like Joel, to be inspired by people like Joel.
Om Mani Padme Hum, you are one of us forever!

My name is Paul Hart. I was the same karate rank as Joel for many years in the late 80s and early 90s and so I got to "rub elbows" with him. He was always a man of integrity, gentleness and just a darn nice and solid human being.
I am sorry to all the family for his loss.

Susan and Doris, I am really at a loss for words. I have a lifetime of memories with Joel, from being young children running around on the beach, teenagers scouting around for girls, college, military service, Joel best man at my wedding, confiding in each other over the years. I will miss Joel terribly. My thoughts are with you, I love you both.

Joel, I wouldn't have made it to Black belt without you, buddy! Your patience and discipline won out over my lack of skills. God Bless You. Mark Travis(Ponte Vedra Beach)

Joel was my Uncle, being my mother’s older brother by 2 years.
I also had the honor of training with Joel for almost 20 years in Cuong Nhu Oriental Martial Arts.
Joel had his PhD and was an avid reader with a thirst for knowledge. He was into philosophies and learning, so I wanted to share the subliminal wisdom and messages that he taught so many people.
Joel was born Dec. 17, 1931. He started training in Cuong Nhu Martial arts in 1972 in Gainesville [40 yrs. old]. After a break of 10 years, he started training again at the Beaches CN school in 1984 in the soft style curriculum [52 yrs.]. He told me when he first started back, that he was going to achieve this black belt.
The soft style did not look as ‘aggressive’ as the hard style karate, but as his Sensei – it was intense with judo throws, aikido rolls, and Kung Fu traps – and Joel did it All!
In 1988 O’Sensei (founder of CN) had decided to merge the separate hard style curriculum w/ soft style curriculum. We had separate classes in both curriculums, but direction of style was truly to blend the soft within the hard, so the traditional soft style classes stopped. Joel was 2 ranks away of achieving his black belt. All the soft style students either stopped or switched over to traditional Tai Chi.
At age 56, Joel was determined to get his Black Belt – so he started as a white belt in the NEW requirements. In Dec. 1992 [60] Joel earned his BB – He accomplished his goal!
Seven years later in 1999, at age 67, he achieved his sandan (3rd degree). Joel was an excellent instructor who epitomized the saying “Teaching is Learning”.
The message was simple: “Vision without Action is a dream soon Forgotten”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joel was known – NOT for his flexibility and agility, BUT for his tenacity, focus and determination in ALL he did!
O’Sensei would talk about Joel at our annual training camps. We would have over 100 BB in a meeting, the majority of us were in our 20-30’s – YET he would talk about “Inspiration” and Sensei Joel in the same breath – Often! I always remembered how impressed O’Sensei was with “Joel Stein”, a true martial artist having no age barriers!
The message was simple: “Don’t focus on what you Can’t DO – BUT Focus on what you CAN DO”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joel was Executive Director and Medical Director at the Child Guidance Center for some 20 years. During this time, I had organized a Program called the Spring Awakening which lasted 8 years. Proceeds each year from the Spring Awakening went to the Child Guidance Center – as Uncle Joel cared so much about his work.
Years later, when Joel worked at Daniel Memorial, he invited me to do programs/talks for the youth.
At both Child Guidance and Daniel Memorial, I remember being on location and talking to many of the staff members about “Uncle Joel” They all were so respectful of Joel – holding him in great admiration for all he did for the children – especially those that were troubled or at-risk. The youths were comfortable in speaking with him – even though he was ‘Executive Director’ and Top-Dog … He was Respected by All!
The message was simple: “If you’re going to Talk The Talk, you have to Walk The Walk”
He truly had made a difference in so many lives!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From everything Joel did – He was detailed and organized. He had a reputation at seminars to ask questions and write everything down. He was meticulous with understanding techniques while the thirst of learning and furthering knowledge was his priority. He would always listen and never be judgemental.
He would have little post-it notes all around his office, car, house, etc. on the various CN philosophies, which he found to be very intriguing. He loved the Philosophies!
He had a routine with his morning stretches or workouts or workshops
The message was simple: “Do What you Love – Love What you Do”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Closing,
Cuong Nhu Oriental Martial Arts has 8 codes of Ethics – yet the one that I have always admired the most is the one that Uncle Joel truly lived by:
“The student should strive to improve themselves and their abilities in the martial arts in order to serve the people.”
Joel was always trying to improve himself – in everything he did.
He served the people … especially the children’s’ community.
Joel…your Legacy will Live On Always!!
Love and Admiration Forever,
Kirk – Sensei, Nephew and Friend

Farber Family & Stein Family
Sorry for your loss, I knew Joel from my stays in and around the beach house during our early days. He was a gentle soul and my heart goes out to you all.
Sincerely,
September 13, 2010
Words aren't enough to describe Dr. Stein's dedication and expertise. He came to Nassau County to see patients and that is where I first met him, and he was immediately impressive to me and very inspiring. He helped so many families there is no way to know how many people he helped. I know there is a special place in heaven for him.
My prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues.

Deepest Sympathy to the family and friends of Joel,
I hold him dear to my heart and am so sad to hear of his passing.
He and I tested together for out Black Belts in Gainesville, Florida in 1992 of which we had that lifetime bond.
He was such an inspiration to me and such a dear person. He was not only a very kind person he showed many people that age does not matter if you have the desire to accomplish anything in your life. I will truly miss him and Cuong Nhu Oriental Martial Arts will surely miss his presence.
May the blessings of love be upon you, May its peace abide with you,
May its essence illuminate your heart, Now and forever more - Sufi Blessing

Dearest Uncle Joel,
You will always be remembered for your kind spirit, caring behaviors, and sense of humor. You positively affected so many lives in your lifetime, and I was one of them! Do you remember when Mom/Dad had me talk with you because I wanted to go to FSU while Scott and Kirk were going to go to UF (they were trying to "force" me to become a Gator), and your calm spirit convinced them that I needed to follow my independent spirit. Your calming words changed my life forever!
We will be thinking of you and all the love surrounding you, during your "celebration of life" next Tuesday.
Our thoughts and love are with Susan, Mom, and all those who loved you in your lifetime!
Rhett, Aurora, Aja, and Rhys

Dearest Joel,
We are sad that you had to go, but relieved that you are not suffering. Though I am relatively new to this family, I grew to love your sweet smile, quick wit and kind heart very quickly. I will miss cooking for you, but will keep Susan in chicken soup for as long as she can stand it!
You are a beautiful angel, God Bless You! Love, Linda B. Farber
