ZOE BROMBERG Obituary

BROMBERG Zoe Proferis Bromberg died on July 12, 2011, in a tragic accident while visiting her friend Robert McLendon in Spain. She was preceded in death by her grandfather Leon Chris Vlahos. Zoe is survived by her parents Charles Clayton Bromberg and Christy Vlahos Bromberg; her brother Charles Clayton Bromberg, Jr. (Robin); her grandparents Frank Hardy Bromberg, Jr. (Lella), Zoe Proferis Cassimus (Marcus), and Myrna Vlahos; uncles and aunts Frank Hardy Bromberg, III, Frederick Wilkinson Bromberg (Nancy), Lella Bromberg Wilbanks (Bruce), Cleo Cassimus O'Neal (Craft), and John Marcus Cassimus; and her loving cousins Wil Bromberg, Anne Hayden Bromberg, Mallie Bromberg, Frances Bromberg, Bo Wilbanks, Alice Wilbanks, Craft O'Neal Jr., John O'Neal, Edward O'Neal, and Michael Anne Dixon. Zoe was born on July 22, 1987 in Jacksonville, Florida. While growing up in Jacksonville, she attended elementary school at Riverside Presbyterian Day School, and completed elementary school, middle school, and high school at The Bolles School. While at The Bolles School, she was a member of the volleyball team and the Greenscape Club, was a Ball Hostess at the Cummer Art Museum, an Antique Show Hostess at the Jacksonville Wolfson Children's Hospital, as well as a Page and a Belle in the Southern Belle Ball. In 2006, Zoe began college at the University of Alabama on a Prime S. Osborn Foundation Scholarship. While at the University, she was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority, Run for Rise, Friends of Hurricane Creek, a mentor and tutor at Hillcrest Middle School, and a regular contributing writer to the Crimson and White as a concert reviewer. In 2007, she was presented as a member of the Debutante Coterie at the Magnolia Ball in Jacksonville, Florida. In 2008, Zoe traveled to Australia with the International Student Volunteers/Conservation Volunteers Australia. That same year, she was presented as a member of the Debutante Coterie at the Redstone Ball in Birmingham, Alabama. In 2009, she took courses in Environmental Studies and Natural Science while studying abroad with the University's New College in Iceland. She graduated in May 2011 from the University of Alabama New College with a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies. Her graduation ceremony, which was postponed by the tragic tornado in Tuscaloosa, will take place on August 6, 2011. She planned to begin pursuing her degree in gemology from the Gemological Institute of America in Carlsbad, California in August 2011. Zoe's name, which means life in Greek, was strikingly appropriate given her vivaciousness, beauty, and love for life. She loved painting, live music, bird watching, her dogs Bear, Dudley, and Dudley II, and especially all of her wonderful friends. She will be forever loved and missed. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 4129 Oxford Avenue, Jacksonville, Florida, 32210, on July 15, 2011, at 2:00 P.M., with the Rev. Jonathan B. Coffey officiating and Rev. Dr. Stephen Goyer, the Rev. Donavan Cain, the Rev. Lila B. Brown assisting. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Zoe's name may be made to the Prime S. Osborn Foundation Scholarship, University of Alabama National Alumni Association, Attention Alumni Fund, P.O. Box 861928, Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35486-1928, or The Bolles School, 7400 San Jose Boulevard, Jacksonville, Florida 32217. Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com

My dearest Zoe. We never met, and so so saddly I learned today that we enever will. I heared about you causally when my daughter Zoe (Bromberg) was born in Iowa on May 2006, during my Ph.D. studies at the USA. Since then we always mentioned you as a possibly long distanced relative. My Zoe is 7 years old now and in some magical way is connected to you. We will always remember you. With deep love. Facundo Bromberg.

Zoe, I did not know you well, but I will always have the memory of you as a sweet young 5th grader sitting across from me in class, smiling and drawing hearts in her notebook. Thank you for this memory.

Dear Zoe,
I lit candles for you and Rob today at The Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche Mission Nombre de Dios, St. Augustine, Florida. It is an ancient place by a river with beautiful gardens and a tiny Chapel covered with ivy and glowing within with peace and love and prayers. I said a prayer for you that the Choirs of Angels come to greet you and that you rest in the blissful joy of heaven forever. I prayed for Rob for healing and wholeness in every way. And for both your families I prayed for the peace that passes all understanding to fill their hearts and minds.

We are friends of Marcus and Zoe. We share your grief in a very personal way. I woke up this morning thinking about your family -knowing that the days following the memorial service are challenging . Our 18-year-old daughter, Heather, was killed in a tragic car accident only 6 months ago. Our range of emotions has been broad. Sorrow and shock and loss and anger. Anticipation and excitement and happy memories. I encourage you to embrace all of your feelings. And please, if you need to talk to someone who understands, contact me.

We are Zoe's aunt and uncle, and we would like to respond to the beautiful post by Simona Cillario: thank you for letting us know, and for being there with Zoe. We take great comfort in knowing that someone gentle and of faith cared enough to take the time to stay with her and pray for her. I know it was difficult for the child who was with you to witness this, but it was also a good example of living your life with compassion for others. It was very kind for you to go back and make a tribute to her. If you had known her, you would know that she loved art and flowers, so she would be very pleased. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for taking the time to find this guest book and to share this special moment. Although it is hard to read, it is comforting to know that she was not alone, but with someone so caring. Please continue to pray for Rob. Nancy and Ricky Bromberg

The Warners

July 18, 2011

Clayton,

Our family grieves for your loss. Our deepest sympathy and prayers go out to you and your family.

Rev. John Claypool, who lost his daughter when she was only 10, said "She was not a possession to which I had been entitled, but a gift by which I had been utterly blessed. I could spend my life in anger and resentment because she had lived so short a time and so much of her promise had been cut short, or I could spend the rest of my life in gratitude that she had ever lived at all and that I had the wonder of those grace-filled years. Gratitude does not in any way eliminate the intense pain and frustration that always accompany the work of rebuilding one's life....but it opens the way to thanksgiving. Gratitude deepens our sense of trust, for we begin to believe that the One who gave us the good old days can be trusted to give good new days as well."

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there.
I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am a diamond glint on snow.
I am a sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the autumn rain.
When you awake in the morning hush,

The best part of working at a school is getting to know the students and the parents. The Brombergs were a perfect example. First there was wonderfully earnest Clayton and then the butterfly Zoe. They both brought joy to us. Now we trully appreciate that the butterfly landed in our lives and we share her loss with everyone that she touched.
