Joseph Welker Obituary

WELKER Joseph "Joe" Welker, 93, of Jacksonville, FL., beloved husband, father, son, friend and child of God, passed away on December 23, 2010. Joe was born June 5, 1917 in the East Liberty section of Pittsburgh, PA., and was the son of Joseph and Luella Marie Welker. He attended Peabody High School and graduated from Penn State University with a degree in Forestry with honors. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Xi Sigma Delta honor societies. Joe bravely served in the 43rd Army Infantry during World War II in the South Pacific, and continued his service after the war in the reserves before retiring as a Colonel. Following the war he married the love of his life, Martha Johnson Welker who joined him in raising their three children who survive him: John Welker, Martha "Marty" Welker Clark, and Joseph (Jody) Welker, Jr. He enjoyed his 7 grandchildren who survive him: Noah Welker, Christy Romero, Nathaniel Welker, Anna Welker, Joe Clark, Robert Clark and Joseph Welker V. Joe was an active member of Riverside Presbyterian Church and served as an elder on the Session many times. He served on call committees for pastors and had a special passion for International Missions, Christmas International House, and peacemaking which was inspired by his World War II experiences. Since childhood, Joe loved plants and agriculture. One of the dreams of his youth was to be an "international plant explorer." After the war, he founded and operated Duval Landscape Company for over 50 years. He was an intuitive draftsman, landscape artist, and logistician which served him well in both his designs and plantings in the greater Jacksonville area. He was the landscape architect for many residences and buildings during his long career including the Cummer Art Gallery. One of the highlights of his career was landscaping the original Cummer Home. He continued to design and develop the property of The Cummer Art Gallery. He was a member and past President of the Florida Nursery and Growers Association, and served on the Governors Agricultural Council. In 2002 he was inducted into the FNGA Hall of Fame. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, 11:00am, December 30, 2010 at Riverside Presbyterian Church, 849 Park St., Jacksonville, FL., followed by a reception at the church. In lieu of flowers you may send memorials to Riverside Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are under the care of Hardage-Giddens Edgewood Funeral Home, 729 S. Edgewood Ave., Jacksonville, FL 32205. I remember going to a Gator Bowl game with my Daddy, and Jody is a part of the memory. My aunt worked for Joe for many years. I loved seeing him enter the church in later years, so proud!

God Bless,

Joe Welker was a wonderful man, working hard for peace and understanding between different cultures.I was lucky enough to work in his program Christmas International House. I am still friends with many of these students. I appreciate the stories he shared. One of my greatest treasures was a plant he gave me one year for Christmas.
Thank you Joe Welker for a life well lived.
I am sorry for the family's loss in his leaving, but he had led a great life.

John, Marty and Jody,
I regret not being with you for your father's service but want you to know that you have been in my thoughts. Joe was always a very special man to me. Thinking of him brings back a flood of fond childhood memories of all of you, your mother and mine.

How happily I remember Uncle Joe when the war was over and he came to visit us.
He was in his twentys then and was a liasson between my older parents and my sister and me. He brought sea shells from various islands and was my mentor in discovering the natural world. It led to my becoming a marine biologist. It was always a thrill when Uncle Joe came to visit: lots of stories, and an opportunity for him to fill us in on my mother’s (his sister’s) side of the family. In fact, he was still filling us in five years ago when we last visited. And what fun to tour his nursery and get the inside story on culturing various plants. There was only one Uncle Joe. Our sincere condolences to Marty, Jody, John and the rest of the family.

Thinking of Mr. Welker always put a smile on my face. How he loved his children and grandchildren. Loved talking to him about PENN STATE!
He was a outstanding man and I am honored to have known him.

All of us who had the honor of meeting this wonderful man have lost a Great friend. Joe had a way of making you a part of his Nursery World. His stories of the early days of our industry were so informative and entertaining. My sincere condolences to all in the Welker family.

Joe was a very special man with such a strong and inspiring faith. What a great photo you've chosen of him, especially for those of us who only knew him when he was older! He will be missed by many, but for his family the void will be greater and so much more personal. May you take comfort in knowing that he is reunited with all the saints who have gone on before him, in the company of our Lord.

Our love to Marty and all the Welker family. We share wonderful memories of your dad going back at least 50 of his 93 years. From kindergarten and girl scout camp outs through years of activities at RPC. Such a wonderful soul!

There was such a gentleness about Joe Welker and a special grace that made everyone feel at ease in his presence. I have always felt so honored to be one of "his girls" and Paul and I will never forget the magical transformation of the Timuquana Country Club for our wedding reception. I love you, Mr. Welker, and will keep your smile and joy for life in my heart forever.
