Corona Kononen Obituary

Corona Rose Becker Kononen Corona, 94, passed away on May 20, 2011 as a result of complications following surgery to replace a broken hip. She was born on Dec. 30, 1916 in Tacoma, the daughter of William E. Becker and Margaret M. Becker. In later years, she often referred to herself as "Corona Kononen, a senior Tacoman." Corona was a graduate of St. Leo's High School, Class of 1934. She worked for many years as a PBX operator at Sears. She volunteered at St. Patrick's Parish and coordinated funeral services with the Altar Society. Among her happiest memories was watching the 4th of July fireworks from her deck in Old Town with her family and friends. She loved to work in her garden and decorate her home. She was predeceased by her husband James, her parents, her only brother, Bruder, and 3 sisters, Sister Marie Cordis (Agnes), Helena, and Rita. She spent many years hoping to one day be reunited with her son William, who was last known to be in California. She is survived by her daughter Kris, of Fairfax, VA, and nieces Diane LeDesma, Bonnie DuPage, and Marla Farnes, and nephew Bill Canning, all of California. The family would like to thank especially the Roger Schweinler family who lived next door to my mom. The family would like to thank the staff of Columbia Bank in Old Town, the kind caregivers at Living Life Adult Family Home in University Place where she spent her brief convalescence, and Hospice for the excellent care she received in her last days. If you desire to make contributions, St. Patrick's Church, 1001 North J St., Tacoma 98403, is suggested. Funeral Mass will be celebrated for Corona at St. Patrick's Church on June 13, 2011 at 11:00 AM, when her beloved Pastor, Father Seamus Laverty, returns from Ireland. Reception at the church and interment at Calvary Cemetery to follow. One of Mom's favorite sayings was, "I'll cry tomorrow." But it is us, Mom, who will cry for you today. I was so saddened to hear the news. I met Corona thru Lauretta Pfeiffer. Corona was a special person and had a heart of gold. I loved her energy and her endless smile. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Jane McDonough called me last night about your Mom (I guess that's a Tacoma grapevine--a older version of Twitter). Jane remembers what good friends our moms were. My memories of our days at St. Pat's and the lessons we learned there are still with me. My thoughts are with you. --Barbara Marano Winner, Spokane

Hi Kris,
What a beautiful obituary for your mom. We miss her so much. I talked with Mark, the mail man, he sends his thoughts to you as well. I have scheduled the morning off of the 6/13/11. I am honored to be a pallbearer for your mom. Please let me know if there is anything I can do ahead of time. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
