Karl Zimmerman Obituary

Karl L. Zimmerman DDS 12/18/1947 - 4/20/2013 Dr. Karl Zimmerman was taken from us unexpectedly April 20, 2013 at Carondelet St. Joseph's Hospital in Tucson. Karl was born in Iowa City, Iowa to Dr. George R. Zimmerman and Vivian Earp Zimmerman (both deceased). He is survived by his loving wife, partner and best friend, Barbara whom he married in 1977. He is also survived by brothers, Dr. Kent (May Gin) Zimmerman, Mesa, whose sons, Scott and Kevin live in Mesa and Tucson, and Dr. Jess Zimmerman of Puerto Rico. Many much loved aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws also survive and miss him deeply. Karl was educated at University High in Iowa City, Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, the University of New Orleans and Louisiana State University School of Dentistry where he graduated in 1986. For many years, he was a dental research technician at U of I School of Dentistry and LSUSD. He was the author and co-author of several research papers published in scholarly journals and presented his research at many national and international research meetings. During his junior year in dental school, he was elected president of the National Dental Student Research Association. As president, he established a national award that has become the highest honor a dental student can achieve for their research. The award still exists and has expanded in scope. He was also a veteran who served proudly as a medic in Vietnam in 1969-70. He established his dental practice in Tucson in 1986 with his wife at his side. It grew to be more than a practice, but a connection of love and caring for his patients. He firmly believed in helping his community and was heavily involved in donating his dental skills to those who had more need than funds. Karl donated his services to St. Elizabeth of Hungary Dental Clinic, Donated Dental Services, the TUSD Grayline Program for needy children, Give Kids a Smile, Youth On Their Own, and Hope Fest. He also served on the board of the Southern Arizona Dental Society and was a past president of the group. Karl was a man of many interests including botany, geology, archeology, poetry, fly fishing and travel. He was always happy to share his interests with anyone he could corral. He was able to revisit Vietnam. He and Barb traveled to Europe several times and did a twenty-five days for twenty-five years cross-continent rail trip from Vancouver to Nova Scotia to celebrate their 25th anniversary. He and Barb had many wonderful fly fishing vacations, and he always remarked that each trip was so rewarding because trout don't live in ugly places. He had a tremendous sense of humor and told jokes as much for himself as to lighten someone's day. His laugh was as wonderful and as big as his heart. Sincere and deeply felt thanks go out to our friends Tammie and Dennis, Bill and Julie; all of our other wonderful friends, family, neighbors and patients who have helped Barb; the superb nursing staff at St. Joseph's ICU and Drs. Ahmed, Zar, Ata and Fagan. A Memorial will be held for Karl at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway, Tucson (520-296-7193) on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Instead of flowers, Barb requests that donations may be made to The Grayline Program, Youth On Their Own, Hope Fest (information available at Bring's), or to a charity of your choice to honor his legacy of giving.

Dear Barb,
I am just finding out about this now, 3 onths later and I am devistaded, and so are the kids. (Chris & Shannon) You know how many times Dr Zimmerman helped me and I will forever be grateful. Never forgetting the time I called you at home when I was out of town in so much pain and he called in an antiobiotic that probably saved my live. Not only that but the times we needed to get in for whatever reason, like not going when we were supposed to and waiting for you to call us for that friendly reminder! We do feel like family much like the majority of your patients. Karl was just a loveable, giving, truely caring, funny all around fantastic person that you couldn't help but love, I loved to listen to him talk and tell his life stories. It was obvious he loved his job and would do anything to help anybody. And you Barb, would not take no for an answer for getting in there for an appointment! I adore and love you so much! The love you two shared was so wonderful to see and I know you will miss him. Life here is only temporary so hold on to your memories here until you meet again. Also my sympathy to Tammie she is the best assistant and we appreciate all she did for us. God bless you. I hope to hear from you soon.

We loved Dr Zimmerman! He was my and my sister's dentist since our first tooth. Our entire family and many friends were patients of his wonderful practice. He and Barb were so warm and friendly and we will miss him greatly. Every time we smile we will think of Karl. Many condolences to Barb and her family.

Though I never had the opportunity to meet Karl, I appreciate all his passion for student dental research. As the most recent past president of the National Student Research Group, I am proud to say that the award competition Karl began in 1985 has continued every year since then and is only getting better. May his spirit live on and keep you and your loved ones strong!

Barbara, sorry to hear about Karl's passing. He was always one of the good guys. Genuine and caring even with his classmates. Even though I have not seen him for quite a few years, I hope he had a great life and fulfilling career. My prayers are with you.

To Barb and Tammy, Our family has never experienced the type of true regard and consideration shown to us that came with stepping into your office! We can't count all the years that we have been helped by Karl, feeling an almost family like concern when we needed an appointment. Karl was a true gentleman who helped me lift my Mom from her wheel chair into my truck, unselfishly opening the office on a Saturday because Tom lost a crown the day before our wedding, gentle enough that my children were fearless of going to Karl and now their children going to him. Caring enough for us to hear "call us at home if you have a dental emergency" on your answering machine, and countless other
kindness', too many to mention. Just like good friends you have all been there for us with smiles and warmth when we needed you. No one will ever replace that! The O'Hara-Arnold, Donley and Moore Families.

Dr. Zimmerman was always so happy to provide his dental gift to the children in the Grayline Program. He would see several children at a time and always ask to see more. His love for these children changed their lives.
Thank you Dr. Zimmermam, you are a true hero and such a joy to work with.
Love also to Barb and Tammy.
