Edmund Wise Obituary

WISE Edmund N. Wise Born in Columbus, Ohio March 27, 1931, son of Herbert and Frieda Wise, died of natural causes in Carlsbad, CA on June 22, 2016. He was a long-time resident of Washington, DC until his recent move to Carlsbad, California in November 2016. He was 85. Ed grew up in Columbus, Ohio where he was an Eagle Scout in his formative years and for a period of time held the title of "youth marbles champion". He attended high school at The Columbus Academy where he played on the varsity basketball team. Ed had a distinguished academic career, graduating with a Bachelor''s degree from Yale University where he managed the University golf team, and a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard University. Mr. Wise joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. He started his legal career at the U.S. Agency for International Development. He then became a partner at the law firm of Dutton, Gwirtzman, Zumas and Wise. He later joined the firm of Sidley & Austin where he opened the London office focusing on the Middle East and helped pioneer a specialty involving legalcounsel for international cross-border trade and development. After returning to the United States he re-joined the U.S. Agency for International Development as the Private Sector Coordinator. He finished his legal career giving back selflessly to his country by helping forge international trade relations between governments and private organizations worldwide. Mr. Wise traveled extensively and continued his efforts in the area of trade development even after his official retirement from government service. Ed was a dedicated family man and an extremely loyal friend who kept extended relationships actively over many decades. He was an avid reader and history buff with a keen mind and memory for historical facts. His favorite entertainment was social gatherings with family, friends and good food. Ed also relished reading the Washington Post "cover to cover" and avidly debating politics, sports and other current events. As a long time Washingtonian he was an ardent fan of the Washington Redskins while still cheering on his beloved hometown Ohio State Buckeyes and St. Louis Cardinals from his days as a farm team bat boy. He also never gave up his love for White Castle hamburgers. Mr. Wise is survived by his wife Susan, and their three children, Elicia (Dan), Stephen (Ellie), and Jennifer (Theodore), as well as his sister Karen Wise Jaffe. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Bradley, Ethan, Kate, Grace, Anna, Henry, Lily, Tyler and Braxton. A graveside service to be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 28, 2016 in Columbus, Ohio at the Greenlawn Cemetery, 1000, Green Lawn Ave, 43223.
