Lyle Hall Obituary

Lyle G. Hall, Jr., 86, most recently of Maplewood of Weston but formerly of Woodstock, Vermont and Dover, Massachusetts, died suddenly but peacefully Monday, September 26, 2016. Born November 2, 1929 in Ridgway, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Lyle G. and Jane Grube Hall. He graduated from Phillips Andover Academy before enrolling at Yale University. Lyle served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge from the military, he graduated from Boston University with a bachelor degree. Lyle was a leader in the family manufacturing business, Stackpole Carbon Company in Saint Marys, Pennsylvania until being called to the ministry. He received his Masters of Divinity at Episcopal Divinity School, where he later served as trustee and chairman of the board. He was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1978, served as chaplain at Dana Hall School in Wellesley and went on to serve congregations at St. Dunstans Church in Dover, All Saints Church in Brookline and Church of St. John the Evangelist in Boston. Soon after his retirement in 2000, the Halls moved to a farm in South Woodstock Vermont, where they enjoyed raising a herd of black sheep, llamas, alpacas and hosting their many children and grandchildren on many occasions. Lyle was a lifetime trustee and former chairperson of The Stackpole-Hall Foundation based in Elk County, Pennsylvania. Lyle lived his life, and prioritized his philanthropy, with the conviction he taught his children: From those to whom much is given, much is expected. Lyle is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Lisbeth (Jordan) Hall; he was the devoted father and father-in-law of Sandy Sheble-Hall and his wife Becky of Dover, Megan Hall and her husband Steven Scrimshaw of Sherborn, Charlotte Perkins and her husband Sam of Lincoln, Cara Liu and her husband Stephen of Norwich, VT, Jordan Hall and his wife Deborah of Medfield, Jessica Hall of Somerville; proud grandfather of Rory, Timmy, Sayre, Kate, Emma, Joey, Jordan, Luke, Hannah, Gus, Jackson, Mackenzie, Sophie. Many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive him. Mr. Hall was predeceased by his sisters, Helen Hall Drew and Eugenia Fredrickson. A memorial service was held at All Saints Parish, 1773 Beacon St, Brookline, MA Sunday, October 2 at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers please consider a contribution to Epiphany School, 154 Centre St, Dorchester Center, MA 02124. Lyle was my godfather, and I was his father's namesake. I am grateful to have this known good man, who spent his life in service to his family, community and God.

To Lyle's family,
What a great guy Lyle was! Wish there were more like him in this world. He has left a great legacy and challenge for his children to uphold. Worked with him on a couple of Footlighter plays and everyone had fun when he was around. He took care of his family and the Ridgway community making "Rough and Ready" a great place for the Girl Scouts and the Footlighters as a place to perform and grow. Many memories were made there. I still cherish the lovely vase you gave me as a wedding present. It holds a place of honor in my home. Liz, accept my deepest sympathy on the loss of you husband and partner in life. He will be missed by the many who had the honor of knowing him.

I was in a play with him many years ago. I only had one line "I hope so sire." He and some little girl who wrote me a "fan letter" were the only two people who remembered that" forgetable "performance... What a guy!! He will be missed by many of us who never knew him as well as we would have liked. Liz ...so sorry for the loss of your partner in life.

Lyle wore many hats husband, father, friend, executive, and priest.
What I shall remember with the most admiration is his role as singer. He grew up appreciating music, and right to the end, he continued to listen to a capella and choral performances, as well as popular and folk songs and old jazz. His wide-ranging and subtle tastes brought forth in him appreciative smiles.

The best was singing with him, at parties and in choral settings, and particularly at Song Service where he sat at the end of the Bear Pit nearest the lake, recently in his quiet go-cart.

His bass voice was remarkable: always on pitch, delivered with force and accuracy from the ground right up to the heavens, enviably self-sustaining, even amid perhaps compromised musical environments, as well as gifted ones. In group harmonies, he confidently held his low register part better than anyone I knew, thus supporting those around him, enabling fellow singers to blend and to make music.

While it is not always easy to fully understand the rituals of the church, with Lyle's clear voice, we heard their deeper resonances.

Whether he was performing Lida Rose or a priestly chant, Lyle conveyed a faithful directness and luminescence which was inspiring; with characteristic modesty, he filled each space, each note, with skill and with grace. We have been lucky to hear him and to sing with him.
