Margaret (Bannerman) Betts Obituary

Margaret (Bannerman) Betts of Evergreen Woods, North Branford, Conn., formerly of Guilford, Conn., and Charlestown, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007.
Born in 1911 in Elizabeth, N.J., the daughter of Alice Scott and David Boyce Bannerman, she was a graduate of the Vail-Deane School and Wells College. She received her master's degree from the Cambridge School of Architecture in Massachusetts.
A dedicated volunteer, she drove for the American Red Cross for 40 years and served on the boards of the Children's Center in Hamden, the Guilford Preservation Alliance, the Dorothy Whitfield Society, and the Guilford Keeping Society. Margaret Betts also devoted time to attending the elderly and reading to and visiting those in need of comfort in the Guilford community and at Evergreen Woods.
She was a skilled sailor for much of her life; watercolor painting, needlework and gardening were continuing interests.
Margaret is survived by John, her husband of 73 years; three daughters, Penelope Colby, of Guilford, and Martha Shaw and Virginia Betts, both of Maine; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Charles Scott Bannerman and David Boyce Bannerman Jr.; and a sister, Alice Bannerman Hilgendorff.
A memorial service will be held at the North Guilford Congregational Church, Saturday, Nov. 3, at 1 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the Guilford Free Library, 67 Park St., Guilford, CT 06437 or to Planned Parenthood of Connecticut, 345 Whitney Ave., New Haven, CT 06511.
Arrangements are with the Hawley Lincoln Memorial, 1315 Boston Post Road, Guilford.
