Charlotte McClure Davis, age 90, died peacefully Tuesday morning in her family home of 84 years. She was the daughter of the late Robert Louis Davis and Charlotte Miller Davis. She is survived by her sister, Lindy Davis Moore; brother, Bob (Carole); nephews, Tommy Moore (Vera), Steve Moore (Kim), and Chris Davis (Jennifer); niece, Cindy Moore Lethgo; great-nieces, Lindsay Moore, Whitney Moore, and Michelle Lethgo; great-nephew, Michael (Chelsie); great-great-nephews, Zack Lethgo and Trey Skiff; great-great-nieces, Vanessa Lethgo and Hazel Lethgo; and a host of friends from St. Mary's and Fountain City.
Charlotte was a lifetime member of Fountain City Presbyterian Church for 80 years. Charlotte was the first female born at St. Mary's to then graduate from their School of Nursing in 1954. In 1955 she became Head Nurse for Pediatrics, a position she held until East Tennessee Children's Hospital opened. She trained RN's, LPN's, ward clerks, and other staff members. Additionally, she trained Pediatric Interns in the practical hands-on aspects of their profession. She was held in high regard by all staffs at St. Mary's – Orthopedics, Medical/Surgical, Recovery, ICU, Pharmacy, Central Supply and Housekeeping. She was always held in highest esteem by the dear Sisters of Mercy who were in charge of St. Mary's. Charlotte was the "glue" who maintained the friendships and camaraderie of staff staying in touch with many of them after retirement at dinners, birthday celebrations, and other happy events.
Charlotte was a board member from inception of Fountain City Town Hall and attended countless City Council and Metropolitan Planning Commission meetings on behalf of Fountain Citians and worked tirelessly each year for Honor Fountain City Day. In 1992 she was selected as Woman of the Year and was chosen in 2011 for the Central High School Wall of Fame and was lovingly referred to as, "The Mayor of Smithwood."
Charlotte was a lover of "all creatures great and small," particularly dogs, cats, squirrels, and the occasional opossum and raccoon. There were numerous occasions when she would take a pet cage, bait it, and patiently wait to rescue a lost or feral dog or cat. Through the years she gave constant and loving care to her many dogs and cats.
Perhaps most importantly, after the death of her mother in 1997, Charlotte assumed the role of Family Matriarch and assured the family would continue weekly Sunday lunches, holiday, and birthday celebrations, cookouts at Cade's Cove, Cove Lake, Norris Dam State Park, and wonderful weeklong vacations in Townsend.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Young Williams Animal Center, 3201 Division Street, Knoxville, TN 37919, (865) 215-6599.
The family will receive friends from 5PM to 7PM on Monday, September 25, 2023, at Stevens Mortuary with services following at 7PM conducted by Rev. Dr. Carl Grosse. Family and friends will meet at 10:45AM Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at Greenwood Cemetery for an 11:00AM graveside service and interment.
Stevens Mortuary Oglewood Ave. at N. Broadway is serving the family of Ms. Davis.

Charlotte was a long time friend of Barbara Perry Emmeric, and sister/cousin/auntie of the heart of the Perry family. Because she didn´t like to fly, she only drove to our Perry cousins reunions that were close by, and we were always pleased to see her. Her quiet, warmth, open, heart, and sweet smile was a delicious respite with the chaos of 30 to 40 Perry cousins! I remember her holding aunt Barbara´s hand during a storm while Barbara hid in a closet. She hosted my two daughters when Aunt Harriett and uncle Don celebrated their 50th anniversary, and my two kidlets immediately gained another great auntie, and she two great nieces. Oh, my, did she wine and dine them! She even sent home a box of Krispy Kreme`s to Oregon, which was such a treat. I saw her last at aunt Harriet´s passing two years ago, sweet, as ever, a little slower, but her beautiful spirit still intact. She was a quiet force, and dearly loved. She was my very first Nurse manager and she set the standard! I have so many memories of her. I had the greatest respect for her. She would protect her nurses like we were her family.

The most outstanding memory I have of Charlotte is the day she and I went to the 4th floor to begin gathering information for St. Mary's 75th anniversary year commemorative book. She opened a drawer of the file cabinet and almost walked out on me! But that's not Charlotte! After hundreds/thousands (?) of hours we gathered and organized every bit of St. Mary's history we could find. With God's help the book was ready in time for distribution at our first 75th anniversary celebration in 2005. Every time we talk, as recent as two weeks ago, we share a good laugh about "that day". Rest in peace, my friend. May God's comfort and peace be with your loved ones.

My favorite memory of Charlotte was learning about pediatrics from her when I was in nursing school at St. Mary´s. She was so professional and demonstrated amazing nursing skills. Many, many years latter at the dedication of the new North Knoxville Medical Center she shared with me how she was so proud that I was to be the Chief Nursing Officer. She made me so proud to be a sister St. Mary´s School of Nursing graduate.

I was a pediatric patient at St. Mary´s when I was 6 years old and I remember Charlotte being one of my nurses. Then in college I worked in the pharmacy and was always happy to deliver to Pediatrics and see her. I know my mother, JoAnn Bates, thought very highly of her. So sorry for your loss, Lisa Bates Berry.
