Born on July 7, 1941 in Greene county, Illinois, Darryl R. Logan passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of November 24, at the age of 82, after a brief illness. He was surrounded by family and lots of love on Thanksgiving day. Darryl was preceded in death by his daughter, Toni Logan Goodrich, and his brothers Tom, and Vernon Logan. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Willie Logan, his daughter Jennifer Logan Meyhoff, grandchildren Blake and Alexandra Meyhoff, Logan Goodrich, and his brother John Logan.
Darryl made his home in Alaska beginning in 1960 when he moved from the midwest with his brother John. He and Willie met at UAF and lived in many locations across the state. His professional work involved several disciplines. He initially worked for Alaska Fish and Game as a stream guard resulting in incredible stories! He and Willie worked as station managers for Wien Airlines in several remote villages, then he worked for more than a decade with the FAA as air traffic controller and in labor relations. He was an entrepreneur and owned a variety of businesses. His firm "Employee Assistance Consultants of Alaska" (employee assistance/counseling/business management programs) brought the very first employee assistance program to the State of Alaska for individuals, families, and employers. Darryl was a lifelong learner. He served as a consultant to industry, and continued learning at various educational institutions; among them – Rutgers University, the University of Alaska Anchorage, Hazelden Foundation / Johnson Institute, and others. He also offered trainings and taught programs at these schools from time to time. In Anchorage he founded The Threshold Foundation - a resource for families dealing with chemical dependency issues of loved ones. More recently Darryl served as a Board Member and Chairman of the Finance Committee at Chester Park where he lived. He also coordinated educational seminars for fellow residents there for a number of years.
As friends and family know well, Darryl had many interests and hobbies. He was a pilot, a fisherman, a dedicated poker player, and an accomplished gardener. Darryl particularly enjoyed growing orchids, tending the Japanese gardens he created, and maintaining a greenhouse atrium. He was an actively involved leader and participant in the Alaska Jaycees (Junior Chamber of Commerce) for many years and built lifelong friendships. He and Willie together developed an extensive collection of original Alaskan art work, which they currently display and share throughout Chester Park for the benefit of all who live there.
Darryl was a generous, thoughtful person, a valued friend and devoted family man. He influenced a great many people and enjoyed helping others his entire life. He was an excellent teacher and mentor. He will be greatly missed.
A "Celebration of Life" event will be held on Saturday, December 9, from 4 - 6 pm at the Alaska Aviation Museum on Lake Hood (4721 Aircraft Dr.) in his honor, where friends and family are welcome to share a favorite story or memory. If you choose in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice organization in your community.

In the early 80's, Darryl bravely invested his life savings and worked long hours to create an employee assistance program (EAP). He did not take a government handout, but the Reagan Administration lowered income taxes at the time which meant that Darryl could keep more of his profits. He wisely reinvested those profits in computers, more employees and office space. It was a prosperous time for the country as America was being rebuilt from the bottom up. Darryl was doing that for Alaska.

His company's mission was to confidentially address its customers addiction and mental health concerns and to promote more cohesive work environments. He modestly understood that he had to grow as a person if his company was to grow economically. So he continuously educated himself and regularly sought input from his customers and staff.

By the mid 90's, he owned the premier EAP in the country. Its state of the art
centerpiece was the "employer referral" or "job jeopardy" process.
Troubled employees were given an opportunity to transform their lives for the better. Many jobs, and perhaps even lives, were saved. EAP professionals
from the lower '48 visited Anchorage to learn from Darryl's success during this period.

In nearly two decades of operation, Darryl's business provided many secure jobs to individuals in the community. I was one of the counselors who worked there. It was the most fulfilling job of my career and oh do I miss those lengthy conversations with Darryl !

Many satisfied clients stated that they would not have sought counseling if their employer did not provide them the "free" counseling benefit. Most often they received what they needed and in a timely manner. How rare is that today?
Research has shown that companies who invest in wellness programs like Darryl's experience reduced health costs. So his EAP company was a win for all concerned.

Darryl's entrepreneurial spirit and compassionate heart (directly and indirectly)
impacted so many people in a beneficial way.We sorely need more leaders like him in our future.
