Dorothy "Jean" Fleming, 94, died peacefully at her home surrounded by family on July 2, 2023, in Johnson City, Tennessee, 1 week prior to her 95th birthday. She was born and lived most of her life in Knoxville, prior to moving to Johnson City in 2015 to be close to family.
Jean started working for Western Union during the War Years. After graduating from Gibbs High School, Jean married Roy Fleming on March 5th, 1949, following Roy's discharge from the Air Force in December 1948. Jean retired from Western Union in 1955 once she gave birth to her son, Jim. Jean returned to work in the late 60's and worked for 25 years in the Men's Department at Kmart. She loved the people she worked with at Kmart and getting to interface with the public. She retired from Kmart in the early 90's so she could care for her mother.
Jean was an active member of Greenway Baptist Church, involved in caring for others and helping with fellowship gatherings. Once Jean moved to Johnson City, she became a member of New Collective Church. Jean was a humble, caring, and always loving servant of Jesus who lived a remarkable and blessed life.
Jean is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Teresa Fleming of Johnson City; grandson, Matthew Fleming and wife Nicole; great-grandson, Nicholas and great-granddaughter, Matilda of Davis, California; grandson, Jason Fleming and his wife Liana; and great-grandsons, Bryce and Marcus of Orange County, California.
Jean has always been surrounded by an abundance of amazing friends, including her very close friend, Helen Clarke of Knoxville, and Bobby Rash of Johnson City. A special thanks to Bobby for her amazing love and support. Also, thanks to the amazing medical team at State of Franklin and Amedisys Hospice of Johnson City.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 11, 2023, from 12:30pm to 1:30pm with funeral service to follow at 1:30pm in the chapel of Stevens Mortuary with Pastor Mark Estepp officiating. Family and friends will meet at Greenwood Cemetery following the service for a 3:00pm graveside service and interment.
