Elizabeth "Betty" Hood Brown Wooten, born in 1930, slipped away from her earthly presence holding the hands of her family on January 13, 2025, as Jesus took her hand for her Heavenly journey, lit by the light of the first full moon of 2025.
Betty was the daughter of Margaret Holt Brown and Walter Monroe Brown Jr., wife of Robert Edward Wooten, sister of Buster Brown and Holt Brown McLean, all deceased.
Betty attended St. Mary's High School and Jr. College in Raleigh, NC. While at St. Mary's she met Bob, a recent NC State graduate, whom she married after her graduation. A lifelong member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter, Betty was a circle leader in years past. She was secretary of the Community Council, member of the Alamance County Service League, National Society of the Colonial Dames in the State of NC, Heritage Book Club, Nine O'clock Club, Town and Country Garden Club and a charter member of the Topper Club. She served on the Board of the New York Symphonic Assembly for many years. Betty and Bob served as Co-chairs for both the Cancer Crusade and the Polio Crusade for Alamance County. They were wonderful supporters of Alamance Community College as they endowed three scholarships in honor of their three children.
As a young woman Betty worked as payroll manager for Brown Wooten Mills, a textile company that her grandfather began in 1918. She was the great-great granddaughter of E.M. Holt, a pioneer in the textile industry and the great-granddaughter of James H. Holt Sr. who was the founder of Glencoe Mills. Her hobbies included tending the roses in her garden and traveling to New York City where she maintained an apartment. Exercising and staying physically fit were important to Betty and for decades she was a devoted member of Dawn Lombardi's exercise class. As a young girl she enjoyed horseback riding with her father and won many awards. Cherished childhood memories also included spending summers with her grandmother in Baltimore. Her happiest times were those spent with her children, grand and great-grandchildren and many friends, most of whom lovingly knew her as Boopsie. Two of Boopsie's special loves were the color pink and her extensive bunny rabbit collection.
