George Edward Canan, 78, of Dry Run Road, Burlington, WV, died Monday, October 17, 2022 at his home while under the care of WVU Medicine Hospice.
Born on July 1, 1943 in the same home that he passed on, he was a son of the late Marvin Edward and Etta Mae (Smith) Canan. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Lou Wolford; a brother, Roger Canan and his wife Joyce and a brother-in-law, Harwell Heishman.
Mr. Canan served in the United States Army from 1962-65, was formerly employed as a diesel mechanic with Spencer Trucking and retired from American Woodmark in Moorefield, WV. He was United Methodist by faith and was a former member of the Burlington Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed hunting and working on old cars and trucks.
Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Betty Ann (Whetzel) Canan; his daughter, Rebecca Roderick and husband Matt of Headsville, WV; two grandchildren, Tony Roderick and wife Megan of Burlington and Misti Roderick and fiance Shawn Hill of Ridgeville, WV and five great grandchildren, Tannar, Kloe, Connor, Lane and Loralynn. Also surviving are two brothers, Steve Canan and wife Donna and Eugene Canan, all of Burlington; two sisters, Barbara Heishman of Romney, WV and Glenda Lupton and husband Freddie of Moorefield and a brother-in-law, Roy Dailey Wolford and wife Nancy of Virginia.
Friend will be received at the First Baptist Church, Patterson Creek Road, Burlington, on Saturday, October 22, 2022 from 12:00 until 3:00 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted immediately following the visitation at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Thomas Caldwell, Jr. officiating. At Mr. Canan's request, those attending are asked to please dress in casual attire.
Interment will be in the Canan Family Cemetery, Burlington.
The Smith Funeral Home, Burlington Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.
