Obituary
Fairfield Harbor, New Bern, NC
Gordon Allan Bailey, beloved husband, father, and son, sailed on for seas unknown and where we cannot follow, on July 18th, 2024 at the age of 68. Gordon was preceded in death by his father, Richmond Allan Bailey, and sister, Jennifer Bailey. He is survived by his wife Debra (Scamman) Bailey; daughter and son-in-law, Chelsea and Kevin Arsenault; son and daughter-in-law, Tyler and Lauren Bailey; his mother and her husband, Claire and Peter Frysalis; and brother and sister-in-law, Jonathan and Laurie Bailey.
At the age of 15, Gordon and his family moved from Beverly, MA to River Road in Stratham, NH, where he met his high school sweetheart who would become his wife of 49 years, Debbie Scamman. Gordon, Debbie, and their two children Chelsea and Tyler, lived in Stratham, NH and were an active part of the community. Gordon served on the Stratham Town School Board and worked as an account manager for F.W.Webb.
For over 35 years, Gordon and Debbie were members of the American Yacht Club (AYC) of Newburyport, MA. To say sailing was a passion for Gordon would be an understatement; it was a way of life. Every Friday night in the summer he would be found on the boat, Captain' and Coke in hand, preparing for a weekend sail to his favorite spots along the Maine, New Hampshire, or Massachusetts coasts. Gordon and Debbie made many lifelong friends at the yacht club, enjoying hosting social events and taking week long sailing trips. Gordon served on the nominating committee of the AYC for many years, and was there every opening and closing day, getting the club ready.
In 2020, Gordon and Debbie sold their home in Stratham, NH and retired to Fairfield Harbor in New Bern, NC. Gordon spent a lifetime by his wife's side taking excellent care of her, especially the past three years when some health issues arose for Debbie. He learned home health care and was always an advocate for his family and their needs.
This past November, Gordon's heart (which was damaged many years ago) became weak. The family was by his side as different medical interventions were tried. In March, Gordon suffered two strokes, putting more strain on his already diminished heart. On July 10th, Gordon was transferred to Duke University Hospital where he underwent surgery to implant an LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device) to help pump his heart. The surgery was a success, but he could not recover from complications after the surgery. Debbie, Chelsea, and Tyler were by his side in the end, and played Jimmy Buffet as he sailed off for parts unknown.
The family would like to thank all of their friends and family for the love and support that has been extended to them. Debbie would like to especially thank Barbara Dion for selflessly coming to stay and help with Gordon's care; their amazing neighbors, Don and Deb Creekmore and Cindy and Rick Bijas, for being of comfort and helping with rides; and Skip Hurd, which words cannot do justice to describe the gratitude felt for all he has done.
There will be a tribute to Gordon at the American Yacht Club in Newburyport, MA on August 23rd at 4pm. Following will be the annual AYC Caribbean Night, a tradition started by Debbie and Gordon.

Joe Ouwerkerk Gordon was the answer man for plumbing and heating issues. His knowledge of steam systems helped me out of a few jams to say the least. My sincere condolences.

Debbie,
My condolences to you and your family. I was fortunate to have worked with Gordon for several years and traveled to see many customers with him throughout Vermont with Fw Webb. The amount of knowledge he shared was incredible. We always had some great laughs and travel days and could always hear the great joy he had in is heart when he spoke of sailing or his family.

We are so saddened to hear of Gordon's passing. You folks have fought the good fight for a long time. Ric doesn't recall much but does remember fondly a few AYC folks including you both. We thank you for your friendship and kindness over the years and for letting us be a small part of the fabric of your rich lives. He has peacefully furled his sails and is now sheltered from storm and gale. With love, Mary and Ric Tauson

Debbie,
I'm so sorry about Gordon's death. We have many childhood memories of Plum Island and our cousins, Jennifer, Gordon and Johnnie. Life seems to have passed by so fast now and I really liked spending the day with you in Essex on the water and the beach. Gordon had such a great way of looking at things and a great sense of humor. God Bless you and your family and I hope you get well. Grief can be so hard, but our special memories help us cope. Remembering you and Gordon today and always.

To whoever wrote Gordon's obituary, my sincere thank you. It is beautifully written and allowed me to get know with my nephew a little better. Gordon was one of my favorite nephews although I did not get to see him that much. I used to babysit Jennifer, Gordon and Jonathan when they lived on Bertram Street in Beverly. I would stop by on the way home so I could the see the kids. I remember Gordon as a cute little boy with a sheepish grin. So sorry for your loss and I pray the wonderful memories you built together will carry you through you pain and on to happy days. Peace. Love Aunt Primilla

Gordon and his cousin Jim were born the same year - Jim in Nov Gordon in Dec. Because of state laws as to when you could start school, Gordon living in MA was able to begin a year before Jim. This was a source of teasing between the two of them.

Debbie
My deepest condolences to you and your family. I was Gordon´s cousin. My mother was one of several of his Aunts. Gordon was the 3rd oldest and probably 16-17 years my senior. So I didn´t really get to know him like i should have. I have been following in the footsteps of our Uncle Russ in genealogy and really uncovering the colorful and interesting history of our family past. Would have loved to share that with him. May the love that he will always have for you burn bright forever.

Debbie, my heart goes out to you. Gordon was a great guy that I enjoyed working with for many years at Webb. He was a talented, knowledgeable man and I had the distinct honor to be around for many years. I am very sad that you two couldn't have the great retirement with you that he had wished for. I will keep his friendly smile and warm ways with me and keep him, you, and your family in my prayers.
