John Matthew Burns

John Matthew Burns, 88, of Dimondale, MI, passed away on Friday, April 12, 2024, Lansing, MI, following a short illness. He was born on December 27, 1935 in Hubbardston, MI to Joseph and Eva (Welch) Burns. John married the love of his life, Shirley Ann Bennett on October 22, 1955 in Portland, MI. He graduated from Hubbardston's St. John the Baptist High School in 1953 and received an Associate's Degree in Industrial Management from Lansing Community College. John went on to work for Oldsmobile/General Motors Corporation in Lansing as a First Line Supervisor in the Quality Control Department. He was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Gerard Catholic Church.
John was a car enthusiast and enjoyed golfing. He was a member of the Grand Ledge Country Club for many years. John, Shirley, and their family loved camping and traveling all over Michigan and Florida. Following retirement, John and Shirley spent their winters in Lehigh Acres, Florida.
John is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Shirley, daughter, Linda; and son, Charles, three brothers, Ray, Patrick, and Terry; one sister, Joanne Howard. He is survived by daughters, Dana (Royce) Wolverton, Leanne (Dean) Hengesbach, son Dan (Danette) Burns; grandchildren, Erin (Mike) Wolverton-Vargo, Elyce (Brian) Babcock, Lucy Hengesbach, Devon Hengesbach, Linda (Rishi) Mukherjee, and Sam (Rebecca) Burns, great grandchildren, Brandon and Colin Babcock; sisters Katherine (Bob) Cashen and Charlene (Bernard) Ward; brothers-in-law, Tony (Judy) and Bruce (Noel) Bennett; sisters-in-law, Jeanie Bennett, Mary Kapustka, Jeanine (Calvin) Cross, Mary Ellen Burns; and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at St. Gerard Catholic Church, 4437 W. Willow Hwy, Lansing, MI 48917 with visitation starting at 9:30 a.m. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in memory of his loving wife Shirley.
