In Loving Memory of Steve Worthy
On October 28, 2025, at the age of 69-and on what would have been his beloved mother's 100th birthday-Steve Worthy peacefully left this world for the next.
Steve was born on April 14, 1956, in Lansing, Michigan, the youngest child of Bob and Marjorie Worthy. He spent nearly his entire life in the Lansing area, attending school in both Lansing and Grand Ledge before graduating from Grand Ledge High School in 1974.
Even before graduation, Steve's strong work ethic shone through in his early jobs at NEHI Royal Crown Bottling Company and The Christman Company. After high school, he began what became a remarkable 47-year career with General Motors at the Delta Township Parts Facility, proudly representing UAW Local 1753. Over the decades, Steve made numerous contributions to GM's efficiency and safety initiatives-many of which were adopted by the company. In 2023, GM CEO Mary Barra personally recognized Steve for his outstanding commitment to safety, a true reflection of his dedication, intelligence, and integrity.
On October 7, 1979, Steve married Susan Berry, and together they built a beautiful life filled with love and laughter. They adopted five wonderful children, whom Steve cherished deeply. His greatest joy was raising his family in Okemos with Susan and watching them thrive. He never missed an opportunity to brag about his children's accomplishments and always had photos ready to share with anyone who would listen.
Steve was known for his warmth, humor, and unmistakable personality-especially his legendary habit of wearing shorts year-round, even during Michigan winters. A lifelong Michigan State Spartan fan, Steve was famously good-natured about his daughter attending the University of Michigan, but he made one thing clear: there would never be a "house divided" flag flying at his home.
Steve had a zest for life and a love for people. He made friends easily and kept them for life-whether they were childhood classmates, coworkers, or someone he'd just met. He loved the holidays and delighted in preparing elaborate meals, baked goods, and his famous homemade candies, which he shared generously with family, friends, and coworkers. Alongside his close friend Bob, he organized countless celebrations and feasts at GM, turning everyday moments into joyful memories.
A dedicated bargain-hunter, Steve was known for always having a coupon on hand and never passing up a good deal. He loved to travel-taking family trips to Florida and Traverse City, adventures to Las Vegas and Niagara Falls with his brother, and fishing trips with his good friend Fred. He was also an avid coin and stamp collector and enjoyed attending coin shows with his brother through the Jackson Coin Club.
Steve's kindness knew no bounds. He was the first to pick up the tab, open a door, or offer help to anyone in need. His compassion extended to animals as well-he volunteered with Mitten Misfits Farm Sanctuary, where he helped with many of their early construction projects.
Steve is survived by his loving wife Susan; children Danielle Worthy Lack (Ben), Tiffany Worthy, Matthew Worthy (Catherine), Kaitlin Worthy, and Ilsy Worthy Baker (Will); and grandchildren William and Eva Lack. He is also survived by his brother Bob Worthy (Vick) and sister Jayne Worthy-Howlett (Brent). Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Marjorie and Bob Worthy.
In honor of Steve's generous heart, the family asks that donations be made in lieu of flowers to Mitten Misfits Farm Sanctuary at www.mittenmisfits.org.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Mills Funeral Home, Peters and Murray Chapel (301 E Jefferson St, Grand Ledge, MI 48837) at 10:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m.
A luncheon for family and friends will follow at Tony M's Restaurant and Banquet Center (3420 S Creyts Rd, Lansing, MI 48917) from 12:00–3:00 p.m.
