John Gray Simpson

John Gray Simpson, 79, passed away on September 3, 2023, in Winston-Salem, NC. He was born on August 11, 1944, in Mount Airy, NC.

Johnny, also known as John, was a kind and funny man with a love for animals and music. He had a very automated mind and enjoyed understanding how things worked. He excelled in numbers, fixing things, and reverse-engineering. John's passion for learning led him to a successful career and a fulfilling life.

In his early years, John attended Dobson Elementary for his primary education and later graduated from Surry Central High School. He continued his education at the University of North Carolina, where he pursued his higher education.

John proudly served in the Air Force from 1967, demonstrating his commitment and dedication to his country.

After his military service, John joined the family paving/construction business. He worked diligently until the business closed. Determined to pursue his passion, John studied and obtained his Real Estate License, becoming a licensed General Contractor. He then went on to work for Ellixson and Sons Contractors, where he contributed to numerous building projects across North and South Carolina.

Outside of work, John enjoyed sailing, going to the beach, and taking rides in the mountains. These hobbies allowed him to appreciate the beauty of nature and find solace in its tranquility.

John is survived by his two daughters, Brandy and Jami, as well as five nieces and nephews: Judith, Janet, Jasper, Jeffrey, and Jere. He also leaves behind many grand nieces and great grand-nieces. He was predeceased by his older brother Harry Simpson, younger brother Ronnie Simpson, sister Elizabeth, sister Dorothy, mother Ethel, and father Sherman.

A Celebration of Life dinner will be held in honor of Mr. Simpson on Friday, September 29th, at 5:00 pm at The Sherwood, a restaurant located in the Sherwood Plaza shopping center. Friends and family are invited to attend and share their memories of John's remarkable life.
