Luz Divina Andujar Cortes, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and devoted servant of Christ, peacefully passed away on February 4, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at her home in Middletown, NY. Born on April 23, 1944, in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, Luz lived a life full of faith, compassion, and selfless love.
The cherished daughter of Maria Elena Andujar and Ramon Cortes Sr., Luz courageously moved to New York in 1961 at just 17 years old to begin a new chapter of her life. She worked diligently as a line worker at A&W in Port Jervis, NY, before dedicating her remaining years to what she treasured most - raising and nurturing her family.
A lifelong believer in Jesus Christ, Luz was passionate about caring for children in need and extending kindness to those less fortunate. Though she never had much, she gave generously from the little she had, embodying the love of Christ in everything she did. Her laughter was contagious, and her radiant smile had the remarkable ability to light up any room, bringing joy to all those fortunate enough to be in her presence. Her faith was not merely spoken but displayed through her unwavering compassion, grace, and humility, which left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know her. Luz reflected Christ's love not just by her words, but by the way she lived her life.
Luz was also known for being an exceptional cook. She loved preparing meals for her church, family, and friends, always sharing her hospitality and care through her food.
As a devoted mother, Luz raised her three children - Jeanette Castillo, Rosita Everett (married to Joseph Everett), and Miguel Castillo (married to Denise Castillo) - with boundless love and care. Her warmth and guidance extended to her cherished grandchildren: Michael Castillo, Dorothy Cox, James Cox, Nathalie Brinson, Diego Ramirez, John Ramirez, and Joanna Ramirez, as well as her great-grandchildren: Yvette, Phoenix, Chase, Alex, Archer, Jaylen, Ethan, Bryson, Castiel, I'onna, and Zionna, each of whom carry forward her remarkable legacy of love and generosity. She is also leaving behind several nieces, nephews and cherished friends.
Luz was predeceased by her brothers, Ramon Cortes and Wilfredo Cortes. She is also lovingly remembered by her aunt and loving friend, Lydia Andujar, and her cousin Edgar Morciglio.
