MARGARET HANSEN KAHN

 

Margaret Hansen Kahn, age 96 passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September 18, 2023. She was the 4th of 5 children born to Frank and Alta (Newcomb) Medsker in Richmond, Indiana on March 22, 1927.  She had her best childhood memories growing up in Alexandria and visiting cousins on the farm in Shelbyville. She was educated at Shortridge Highschool in Indianapolis and spent a year at Butler University studying Business Administration before starting to work as a secretary at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church and eventually becoming the Wedding Director for 40 years.

 

Margaret was a talented, creative, and energetic person who always had a project or was volunteering for something. In the early days of her married life, she made the curtains, refinished furnisher, made clothes, smocked dresses, and gardened. Music was always a big part of her life, and she became quite an accomplished pianist. She was President of the PTA, won many ribbons at the Blue Flower Garden Club, and was a member of Stansfield Circle.

She served on the Board of Directors of the Indiana State Symphony Society, Indiana Society to Prevent Blindness., and the Aspen Scholarship Board. She served as President of the Junior Group (starting the TINY TOTS concerts), and the North Group of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO). As past President of the Women’s Committee, portraits were collected of the Conductors to be displayed at Clowes Hall and Circle Theater. She was especially proud of having served on the National Board for Women’s Association of Symphony Orchestras. She served as a member of the Alliance on the Indianapolis Museum of Art and ART STUDY group, the People of Vision, Theater Arts Guild, and the Marion County Medical Society Auxiliary, and the Contemporary Club.

Later she worked as an Office Manager for the Cincinnati Floor Company and transitioned into sales for computer access flooring where she worked for 18 years and retired in 1993.

 

Margaret was widowed at 53 when she was preceded in death by her first love and husband Walter E. Hansen Jr. in 1980.   They had three daughters.  She was blessed with a second loving marriage to Dr. Alexander Kahn in 1984 and had many happy years travelling to Europe and Asia, playing tennis, bridge, visiting Alex’s 3 sons and enjoying their condo in Florida with family and friends.

Alex preceded her in death in 1998.

 

 She is also preceded in death by her siblings, Jean, Marilyn, Marylou, and Bob, and her daughters Jean and Sally. She is survived by her daughter Karin (Albert Cobetto), and her daughter Jean’s husband Floyd Miller. She is also survived by several Nieces Jan (Bob) Delph, Tamra Medsker Cochran, Tracy Medsker, Terri Medsker Signorino, Sarah (Jim) Gann, Barbara (David) Hylsop Marjorie (Steven) Duncan,  Nephews Kim Dahlstrand (Debbie), William and David (Medsker) Wessler and Tom Hansen (Susan).  She is also survived by Alex Kahn’s sons Dr. Kenneth (Caren), Dr Larry (Lynn), Dr. Ralph (Joni), and his grandchildren Becka, Zach, Brendon, Austin, Patrick, Maddie, and Julia.  She is also survived by her sister- in-law Leah Dee (Deedle) Kahn.

 

Margaret always created a lovely home where she liked to entertain family and friends. She’s most remembered for her fun-loving nature, innate beauty, energy, and positive attitude.

 

A Celebration of life will be held  at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, 9700 Allisonville Rd. on Friday October 6, from 3-6 pm. In Lieu of flowers, please give to The Muscular Dystrophy Association.
