Peter Patrick Navarre of Monroe, Michigan, passed away on October 22. He was 83 years old.
Pete was born in 1940 to Francis James Navarre and Ruth McKillip Navarre. A descendant of the city's founder, Colonel Francois Navarre, Pete was an active resident of Monroe and member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He graduated from Monroe Catholic Central High School in 1959 and attended both University of Toledo and Northwood University. He led an eclectic professional life, spanning journalism, business, and law enforcement. He was a reporter for the Monroe Evening News and Toledo Blade and owned Navarre Ambulance Service. Pete also owned two restaurants in Monroe, Navarre's and Trapper's. He had a long career with the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, serving in many roles, including marine officer, road patrol, communications supervisor, sergeant, detective, and undersheriff. He received numerous commendations throughout his career and solved multiple high profile cases, including the 1967 murder of Eileen Adams after working on the case for more than four decades. Later in Pete's career, he worked as a private investigator, then a bailiff for Monroe County Probate Judge Frank Arnold, until he retired in 2017.
Pete is survived by his two children, Nicole Navarre Gelardi and Michelle Navarre; their mother, Barbara Navarre; his sister Janice Navarre-Smith; and his brother James Navarre. He was preceded in death by his sister Noel Navarre Wagner. He leaves behind five grandchildren: Christopher, Carrington, Joseph, Cecilia, and Lily.
A memorial service for Pete will be held at a later date. Bacarella Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
