God, in His almighty power, who is too wise to make a mistake and too just do wrong, saw fit on Friday, June 14, 2024, at Southgate Nursing and Rehab to take the soul of Mrs. Phyllis B. Powell, affectionately known as "Kitty" at the age of 93. She humbly bowed to the will of God and peacefully entered into her rest, from her trials and tribulations to her better, from her labor to her reward.
On February 2, 1962, Kitty met and married David Powell, he preceded her in death. She was a member of St. John's Missionary Baptist Church under the direction of the late Reverend G.W. White until her health began to fail. Kitty lived all her life in the
Pulaski, Illinois community. Kitty is the last of the original generation on Vine Street.
Kitty was a very loving & devoted mom, supporting her children no matter the difficulties. Her passions including tending to her flower garden, where she loved planting Zinnias and Rose bushes. She loved to dress up and wear her many hats. Kitty's favorite TV shows were The Young & The Restless and The Bold & The Beautiful, and she was an avid player of The Price is Right. She was an extreme fan of Blues music, even during her stay at the nursing home, she would be laying in her bed listening to music by B.B. King and Bobby Blue Bland. Her happiest moments were when she was gathered with her family, she loved Diet Pepsi and fried fish.
Phyllis (Kitty) is survived by six children: Brenda (Dave) Ballard of
Pulaski, IL, Emmett "Dewayne" Lane of
Pulaski, IL, Christine Reed of Cape Girardeau, MO, David (Jean) Powell of Fort Stewart, GA, Darlene (Larry) Winston of
Mounds, IL, and Donald Powell of Hopkinsville, KY; one brother and sister-in-law, Harold (Jo) Milbourn of
Chicago, IL. She's survived by 25 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, and 14 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, by three children: Ralph (Darlene) Lane, Shirley (Oral) Perkins, and James Powell. She was also preceded in death by her four sisters: Rachel Adams, Lovie "Tudie" Thompkins, Irene McBride, and Gloria Schoffner; three grandsons: Taurice Lane, Terrell Lane, & David "DJ" Ballard; two granddaughters: Essence & Nechole Lane; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Lane; and son-in-law, Eric Reed.
Services for Phyllis (Mrs. Kitty) B. Powell will be held on Saturday June 22, 2024, at 12:00 pm at St. John Missionary Baptist Church in
Mounds, Illinois with Apostle Deborah Young her niece, Eulogist and Pastor Phillip Stone. Visitation will be Saturday at the Church from 11:00 am until the Funeral hour at 12:00 pm. Burial will be in the Green Lawn Memorial Garden in
Villa Ridge, Illinois. Massie Funeral Home in
