En memoria de Rose Guzmán
September 27, 1924 - October 16, 2023
What can be said about a great mom who was on this earth for the past 99 years? If you were to ask her she would say she had already done the 99 and therefore was in her 100th year. Yet, she stopped counting at 39. Mom was an expert seamstress, she loved sewing and was self taught and was sought after for her skill. She worked for Meadowbrook Theatre in Rochester, MI, Detroit Opera House and Birmingham Theatre. She was very proud of the work she did and enjoyed seeing her creations in the plays. Her favorite being Christmas Carol with her grandkids. Mom's sewing skills extended to crocheting and needlepoint.
Mom was always of quick wit and would pretty much go along with any antic we wanted her to do or tried on her, and then she would get us back. She brought many laughs and joy to us all. She loved her Pedro Infante and his Mexican songs and actually still carried a picture of him in her wallet. Upon getting an album autographed by Chente, whom she also loved, at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City she grabbed Chente and surprisingly, or not, gave him a kiss! Xóchitl showed mom where he lived.
Mom practically invented what is now known as 'Spanglish'. In fact, she was the Queen of Spanglish. She had so many Spanglish words or phrases that were handed down to us and are of a norm to us. She taught us Spanish, and we taught her English as the older kids started school. Efe, Spanish Pig Latin, was a fave as well.
Mom loved her garden and the numerous varieties of flowers in her yard, which she meticulously took care of. She loved when a surprise flower or plant would come up, planted by a bird she'd say. Flores del campo as she called them. In fact, her favorite song is La Feria de las Flores. She loved to sing and could play the harmonica.
Mom loved to go everywhere and anywhere. She most recently traveled to New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, California, all over Michigan, Stratford Canada, a town which holds the Shakespearean festival; as well as England, France, Puerto Rico and Mexico as much as she could to visit family, especially Xóchitl and her family. Also traveled to New York World's Fair in 1964, Expo 67 in Montreal Canada, and Hemisphere 68 in Texas. A favorite was going to the Tulip Festival in Holland MI.
She was a volunteer of American Baptist Women Ministries and a member of the Potluck Group of First Baptist Royal Oak.
At the age of 99 Rose has been predeceased by her parents and all of her 9 siblings, Rose's husband of 55 years, Wiliam J Guzmán, in 2004, by her daughter, Maria Guadalupe (Norton) Guzmán, in 2020, and in 2014 her great grandson, Joseph Diego Muñoz. Survived by her children William J Guzmán Jr, Beatrice Guzmán, Peter Guzmán (Kelly), Mary Guzmán-Muñoz (Richard Muñoz), Elizabeth Guzmán, Sandra Guzmán de Grimm (Bill Grimm), Linda M Guzmán and Rosa Guzmán and son-in-law James Norton (Maria). As well as 11 grandchildren- Sherry, David, Joseph (Lauren), Laura Beth (Natalie), Ricardo (Candice), Carmelita (Frank), América (Brandon), Linda A, Isabella, Katarina, Lorenzo. And six great grandchildren- Brynn Rose (who she always called her Rosita), Jack, Peter, Sully, Gabi, and Maya.
Mom, we will all miss you. Con el cariño de siempre, nos veremos despues.

Me gusta cantarle al viento
Porque vuelan mis cantares
Y digo lo que yo siento
Por toditos los lugares
Está good
