Sonia Larson (nee Christie), age 91, of Random Lake, passed away on August 28, 2023 at Gables on the Pond.
She was born on January 24, 1932 in Milwaukee, WI, a daughter of the late Edwin and Philomena (Zoltak) Christie.
Sonia attended schools in Milwaukee and graduated from Marquette in 1954 with a degree in Business Administration.
After graduation, Sonia worked for the Department of Army in Special Services, stationed in Germany and France. She traveled extensively to Italy, Spain, Morocco, Prague, Moscow, but her favorite place was Paris. She often visited there. Other position she held were as a foreign student advisor at the University of Illinois and as program director for the Johnson Foundation in Racine. There she met such notables as Madame Chang Kai Shek, Jesse Jackson, members of the White House Staff, ambassadors from several countries and the Harlem Globetrotters.
Sonia married Henry Fritjof Larson on August 31, 1971. After a honeymoon in Europe, they bought a hobby farm and although she had never been on a farm, she enjoyed the various experiences of raising sheep, ponies, and geese. Sonia and Henry were charter members of the Vennskap chapter of Sons of Norway, holding various offices and participating in local parades with a float designed by Henry. They made two trips to Norway, going as far north as Kirkenes. She enjoyed playing bridge, and was a frequent volunteer at the Sheboygan County Historical Museum. Sonia also volunteered with the Sheboygan Area Sister Parish Outreach Program and traveled with the group to New Orleans to work with Habitat for Humanity for several years.
She was an avid supporter of the Democratic Party; Sonia enjoyed working on various campaigns for State and National Elections for many years. She met five Democratic Presidents over the years and enjoyed telling of her experience to be a part of an Honor Guard while in college for President Truman.
Upon retirement as personnel manager from Hayssen, Sonia and Henry continued to travel to Europe as well as all over the U.S. in their motor home. She also assisted Henry in their own business, Sunflower Builders.
She is survived by her step-son: James (Barbara) Larson; step-daughter: Kristine (Bruce) Parker; step-granddaughter: Stephanie Larson and her family; nephews: Stephen (Andrea), David, Patrick; sister-in-law, Barbara Christie; and good friends: Anita Klein, Merydith Servis, Kim Wollner and Mary and Paul Wagner.
She is also survived by great nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Sonia was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and brother, Edwin Christie.
Visitation will be held on Monday (September 11, 2023) at the Suchon Funeral Home in Plymouth from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM; with a prayer service to follow at 5:00 PM. Deb Hamm, Parish Director of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church will officiate. Inurnment will be at Waldo Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Sonia's name for Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in Random Lake.
