Stephen Matthew Ranallo, 55, of Cumberland died peacefully while surrounded by immediate family this past Friday, January 21, 2022 at Cumberland Healthcare. He was born on this same day, January 21, 1967 in Cumberland, WI to Carl and Mary (Ballis) Ranallo.
Steve is probably best known for his unfortunate ATV accident which left him a quadriplegic at the age of 33. He will best be remembered, however, for his strength and resilience refusing to let his condition stop his pursuit of independence, which in turn inspired so many to embrace the fellowship of support and togetherness.
Growing up and into early adulthood, Steve was an avid fisherman during both summer and winter months, and a dedicated deer hunter during both gun and bow seasons. Even post-accident, he would enjoy sitting numerous fall hours hunting with a specially designed trigger mechanism affixed to a gun or crossbow, and on two occasions put down a buck immediately after which Steve had no difficulty finding a willing friend eager to field dress the deer for him.
Steve was not just an avid Wisconsin outdoor sportsman, but he also had a sincere fascination with nature as often demonstrated by his memory for interesting facts of animal behavior, geography, and the practical sciences. His authentic way of sharing these fun facts with others was truly endearing.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Ranallo, brother, Joe Ranallo, sisters: Marie (Kurt) Mehlhoff of So. Minneapolis, Micki (Mark) Schaefer of Eagan, MN, Carla (Matt) Daubenspeck of Eagan, MN; nieces and nephews: Abby, Sophia, Tommy, Max, Marcus, Merrick, Cora, and Celia. Steve was preceded in death by his father, C. Steve Ranallo; grandparents: Joe and Laura Ballis and Henry and Lucy Ranallo.
A private family funeral service will be held St. Anthony Catholic Church with Father Tom Thompson officiating. Pallbearers are Mark, Kurt, Matt, Max, Marcus, Merrick, and Tommy. Honorary pallbearers are Abby, Sophia, Cora and Celia.
A celebration of Steve's life will be held on September 10, with an open invitation to any who wishes to honor Steve's memory. In his living will, Steve asked that his golf benefit continue after his passing with all proceeds going to spinal cord research, so in addition to a celebration of life, September 10 will also be the first annual Steve Ranallo Memorial Golf Benefit. The family asks that in lieu of flowers or gifts, memorials be offered so that Steve's family may direct them to a spinal cord research center of their choosing.
