Vickie Madrid Nelson was born on July 13th, 1957. After a brief but courageous fight with leukemia, she was taken home to the Lord on Monday, March 22nd, 2021 at the University of New Mexico Hospital in the presence of her husband Eugene and three daughters Nicole, Joselyn and Alissa.

Vickie was a beautiful and generous daughter of the Lord and lived her life in service of Him. She was born in Slaton, TX to Eddie and Sallie Madrid and as the second eldest of eight children, she learned from a young age to give her love freely and earnestly.

She moved to New Mexico to attend the University of New Mexico in 1975 where she graduated with her bachelor's degree in secondary bilingual education. One year later she returned to UNM where she built a rewarding career at the Latin American and Iberian Institute. She retired in 2019 as the Associate Director of the LAII after 37 years at UNM. Vickie held great pride in the work she did to support and pave the way for countless students, staff, and faculty across the university to reach success. Her joy in helping others transcended her professional status and she was recognized as a witness of the Lord's grace and kindness in her daily interactions.

Before Vickie would cultivate her career at UNM, she would meet the love of her life Eugene while attending classes on campus. On their first official date, the two attended a Lobo basketball game in the renowned PIT. This became a tradition that would continue through their courtship, into marriage and later with their children. They married on May 31st, 1980 and joined their two families together. In May of 2020, Vickie and Eugene celebrated 40 years of marriage. Vickie's legacy of faith, love and diligence continues through her three daughters and five grandchildren.

While our hearts are still breaking over her sudden passing, our God continues to fill us with joy and the assurance that we will see each other again when we join her in the Kingdom of Heaven. "One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple." Psalms 27:4

Vickie is survived by her husband, Eugene; her daughters, Nicole (Eric), Joselyn (Andrew) and Alissa (Andrew); her grandchildren, Avory (20), Collin (17), Ava (15), Justus (9) and Michael (5); her parents, Sallie and Eustacio Madrid; her siblings, Connie, Mary Grace, Manuel, Maria, Edward, Elizabeth and Anna; and her four brothers and five sisters in the Nelson family.
