Gary Leavel Obituary

Gary Leavel

Gary D. Leavel passed away suddenly on July 17, 2025. He was born in Woodstock, Va., on October 6, 1940. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Helen Leavel; and a brother, Ronald Lee Leavel; and sister-in-law, Eula. Gary leaves behind a sister, Mary Wynne and her husband, Jim; along with two nephews, Jimmy Wynne (Lesley) of Palmyra, Va., Jason Wynne (Alex) of Berwyn, Pa.; two nieces, Margaret Guerreri (Chris) of Gordonsville, Va., and Sherri Culver of Ormond Beach, Fla. He has seven great-nieces and nephews.

Gary graduated from Lane High School in 1958 and received a B.A. degree from Randolph Macon College in 1967. After graduating from college, he enlisted in the Army for several years. When his duty was complete, he did some travelling before pursuing a Bachelor's of Science degree at the University of Virginia in 1979. He also taught history in Louisa County for many years. He had a sharp mind for historical facts, even during his later years. Before taking early retirement, he was a supervisor at Newcomb Hall Bookstore. Upon retirement and until recently, Gary was involved in his homeowner's association at Sherwood Manor, where he resided. He will be missed for his great humor, his strong independence, his kind ways, but mostly for being a best friend to his sister.

A graveside service will be held on July 28, 2025, at 10 a.m., at Monticello Memory Gardens.

So sorry to hear of Mr. Leavel's passing. I hadn't kept up with him since high school but he was my government teacher at Louisa County High School. He even attended my wedding. He was a great man. Prayers for comfort for his family.

Mr. Leavel taught me government at Louisa County High School in 1974. He was a very good teacher. My fondest memory of him was referring to the government book as "The bible" and it touched a nerve with one of my classmates. So very sorry to hear of his passing.

We have lived on Lockesley for 38 years as neighbors of Gary.
He will be remembered for his kindness and diplomacy.
He made sure our neighborhood was both safe and peaceful as well as aesthetic.
Gary had ornamental trees planted and an attractive retaining wall built on our street.
He was very knowledgeable about current events and we always enjoyed talking to him.

Our condolences to his family.

He will be missed.

We lived in Sherwood Manor on Lockesley Terrace for over 35 years but moved out of the area in 2020.

Gary was a dependable association board member and was known to slowly drive around the neighborhood streets to keep an eye on things, even after he had mobility issues.

We enjoyed talking to him and are sorry to hear of his death.
