Georges Mathe Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 18, 2010.
PARIS (AP) - Oncologist Georges Mathe, who in 1959 performed the world's first bone marrow transplant, has died, the French president's office said Monday. He was 88.

Nicolas Sarkozy's office said Mathe died on Friday, but did not provide any additional details.

"His contribution to the progress of oncology remains major," the statement said. "In 1959, he performed the first bone marrow transplants on six Yugoslav physicians who had been accidentally irradiated at a nuclear power plant. Four of them survived."

Mathe was the first physician to use bone marrow transplantation to treat leukemia. The procedure involves giving patients a high dose of cancer drugs and radiation to kill leukemia cells. Transplanting bone marrow is also used to treat radiation and blood diseases including sickle cell anemia.

Mathe founded a specialized cancer center in the Paris suburb of Villejuif in the early 1960s and ran its blood disease unit until 1990, the statement said.

Thank you Dr. Mathe for your tremendous contribution to medicine. I substituted at a local school here in Gainesville, FL. Monday, October 18th, 2010, and we talked about cells. The middle school students were very knowledgeable about leukemia and had friends and loved ones that have been ill and lived with leukemia. Of course some of their loved ones succumbed to leukemia, but we can't win every battle. Your work lives on. with Gratitude, Melanie Richard

Celebrating a life well-lived. I know that the tears are flowing but know this he was a wonderful instrument used to help many. God has promised a time when man will not have to be concerned with sickness and disease. He shares this promise with us at Revelation 21:4 "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more neither will mourning nor outcry, nor pain be any more. The former things have passed away."
