I was in Junior High when Coach Ballard went 3 years undefeated at Ingleside High, he was my health teacher and was always doodling with x and o's. All of us young guys would always attend his practices and we totally respected this man. He came to our class reunion a year or two before he passed away and for him to come to little old class B ingleside was a big honor for us and I'm sure he felt the same way as he got his start in Alice and Ingleside. It doesn't get any better than Coach Bellard and Coach Haugen.

I have waited to submit this because of the emotion and wonderful memories going back to 1951-1952.
Coach made a lifelong impression on this 85 year old
Man, and can honestly say one of the finest
Christian men I have known.
I played in Alice tx had a weak knee. Coach would
Drive me to the UT trainer Medina and get treatment so I could play Friday (of course we stopped for barbecue at Luling)
Remember getting on that bus weighing 165 lbs
And arriving at about 6'3 and about 210-
He made you feel like there wasn't anything you couldn't do- I loved this man- and have much respect for his way oh life!!!!

He put the Breckenridge Buckaroos on the map. He put the San Angelo Bobcats on the map. His offense put the Longhorns on the map and the Aggies too. He was one in a million!

Coach Bellard was my Athletic Director at Texas A&M University. When he arrived on campus there were, to the best of my knowledge and belief, three or four black athletes with athletic scholarships. They were all on the track and field team. Coach Bellard approached us after arriving on campus and asked if we could help him recruit African American athletes. He made it clear that he wanted athletes who not only could play football, but could be successful in the classroom as well. His request was granted and the rest is history. Other A&M coaches followed the plan that Charlie Thomas and Emory Bellard had embarked upon. Coach Bellard also guided and implemented the plan that brought women athletes to Aggieland under Title IX. His vision has led to several national women championships at A&M. He was a legend that I was proud to have known and touched his life. Rest well my mentor and friend. We will never forget you.

The first time I met Coach Bellard was at the Texas High School Coaching School in July of 1966. I was working part time for Truett Laboratories and had a booth at the Coaching School. He came up the booth and asked if I was John Zerr. I said yes. He said, "you are going to be my new trainer at San Angelo Central High School". I told him that I was already employed by Northeast ISD and Churchill High School in San Antonio. He said that he had already talked to the Athletic Director and said that I would not be working for Churchill but for the San Angelo Bobcats. He said "they cannot pay you what I am going to". I said "lets talk"
The thing I most remember about Coach Bellard is that his convictions were very solid. Never give up. I always admired him for that.

Had the opportunity to meet and interview Coach Bellard when he brought the Aggies (Curtis Dickey, Mike Mosely et al) to Boston to play Boston College in 1978. He was a gracious gentlemen, courteous and spent a good bit of time with me despite the fact that I was from a smaller station locally based.
A few years ago I met his grandson who was speaking at a military related event on the South Shore in Mass.
RIP Coach, your earthly mission is now complete. May God bless your family, friends, and extended football family

It was 1976 and my first year as a college football coach.I was the offense halfback coach at Albany State with Bob Ford. Emory was speaking at a clinic in Tarrytown, New York on the wishbone offense. He was an impressive speaker, very articulate and spoke with conviction about his offense. I must have asked three or four questions about blocking from the halfback position during his presentation. He was very gracious and answered all my questions. He even spent five to ten minutes after the lecture. His expertise and professionalism helped our 1977 offensive backfield and team to have one of the most productive years in the history of the program. Thank you Emory. I will never forget you. Coach Bellard was a true Aggie and Bulldog, though he played football at Texas (and invented the Wishbone as an assistant coach there) and Southwest Texas during his undergraduate days. He truly was a great Texan, and what you saw was what you got in a great way. Many A&M and MSU football student-athletes will remember the call: "Finish formation!" but it made every team just a little bit better. He put his heart and soul into coaching and helping young men, and he is missed. We are sorry to be unable to attend the memorial Saturday in Georgetown, but our prayers and sympathy remain for the extended families.

Mary K. was my mother's first cousin and Emory used to play golf with my dad in Navasota. My mother still remembers the last time she saw Emory--in his cowboy boots smoking his pipe out in his in-laws' yard. I will always be grateful to him for serving as a pall bearer at my grandmother's funeral. May he rest in eternal peace.

In the winter of 1959-60 Coach Bellard became the new head coach at San Angelo Central. I found out a few years ago that the other finalist for the SAC job was Gordon Wood. Brownwood and SAC made wise choices. That was my sophomore year of high school and I was a 3rd stringer on the B-Team (before Junior Varsity teams existed). We found out right away why he had been so successful at Breckenridge and Ingleside. The off-season regimen was vigorous and demanding. Because UIL rules didn't allow use of any football equipment for off-season workouts (other than a football), we were required to buy baseball shoes. Shortly after he arrived at SAC, he installed a station that had about six 20 foot ropes. We had to climb those ropes three times each day after practice and you weren't supposed to use your feet. I weighed about 140 pounds at the time so I was able to climb the ropes fairly easily. Our bigger players like Mike Sheehan and Mike Tabor had their troubles climbing the ropes, but one of our bigger players (Earl Bowman) proved that big guys could accomplish the task. Earl was a magnificent athlete.
My father was a Methodist minister so we moved around a lot and in June, 1960 we moved to San Benito; therefore, I never got to PLAY under Coach Bellard.
As others have mentioned, Coach was as classy an individual as I've ever known and a great TEACHER. I don't remember him cursing players so I'm pretty certain he didn't. My coach at San Benito (J. W. Helms) was much like Coach Bellard in that respect. The ultimate put-down that Coach Helms could throw at you was to call you a Mullet. There was never any stronger language than Mullet used on the field.
Ironically, one of my teammates from San Benito (Jim Helms, J. W.'s son) joined the UT staff the same year as Coach Bellard (1967) and they both left UT after the 1971 season - Helms to OU and Coach Bellard to TAMU.
To me Coach is an endearing title. I remember much more about interactions with my coaches than with my regular teachers; therefore, coaches, always remember you are part of an elite group of "influencers" on your students. There cannot be a finer example of how to conduct yourselves that to follow Coach Bellard's example.

Coach Bellard was one of the nicest men I ever met. I had the opportunity to work with him in San Angelo typing his new play book when he first came to Central. I did not think much of football coaches at the time but he changed my mind big time. He was a blessing to all he met. Silva Davis

Coach Bellard was the epitome of grace and class. He was a wonderful role model to so many young men and women, too. He was our coach at San Angelo Central High during my high school years, and to say that he gave our school and the city of San Angelo so much pride and joy when the Bobcats won the state championship in 1966 is an understatement. Those of us who knew and loved him will never forget him. He lives on in his family and in those whose lives he touched.

Many of Susan's friends met Emory for the first time at one of our school reunions. Needless-to-say, this sweet, kind and gentle man won all of our hearts. Yes, we knew of his great accomplishments as a coach, but it was Emory, the man, who we came to admire and love. We are blessed to have called him our friend. Coach Bellard was a gentle, gregarious genious that set the standard for coaching in Texas. He was brilliant, meticulously prepared and well organized in his approach to football and life. I guess I was among the first running backs he coached when I was a sophomore in Alice. He would string out wire cables in zig zag formations for about 30 yards and have us run between them so we could practice cutting. Once he had his wife sit on the ground about 5 yards in front of us and as we ran toward her he would yell right or left and we had to cut that direction. I got tangled up and went right over the top of her. He came and got the football from me and we didn't run that drill again. When the head coaching job at Alice came open that year we heard the seniors wanted an older coach so he went to Ingleside and, as they say, the rest is history. Philip Joseph San Antonio

To Bob and all the family. Mom and I had the wonderful pleasure of seeing Emory at Dad's service and I was so pleased to have a chance to visit at the Bobcat Hall of Fame induction. I am so sorry for your loss and you and all the family will be in our prayers! I will always remember how wonderful your Dad was to all of us and the staff and how gracious he was to put up with me at the field house when I was just a kiddo! The many times that Mike would run the stands and do sit-ups with Emory every day before parctice when Mike was only 10 years old is something the he stills talks about with great joy to me! The many great adventures our Mom's had together!Helping to throw papers for the Standard Times! So many memories! I know he was such a true gentleman and we have been so blessed to have been but a small part of his life and legacy. May God bless you all!

To Emory's family and friends--please know that Coach Bellard touched SO many lives in so many ways. I was honored to work with Coach Bellard for four years at Mississippi State as a Bulldog Hostess. From the football field, to a quiet conversation, Coach Bellard had an amazing presence. On my MSU graduation day, Coach handed me my diploma on stage, something I will never forget. GO DAWGS. GO COACH. A true gentleman you will always be.

I had the privilege to work on Coach Bellard's staff as a student worker from 1972 to 1974 and then as receptionist and as secretary for the offensive coaching staff with such good men as Chuck Moser, Dan LaGrasta, Tom Wilson, Donnie Wigginton, and Bob Stanley. Coach Bellard was a class act - he responded to every person who had an interest in Texas Aggie football and believe me, there were plenty of armchair quarterbacks, He treated every person with respect and dignity and made you want to be a better person. It was an honor to know him and to learn from his work ethic. He was one of the most disciplined people I have ever known. Coach Bellard's legacy is not only measured by the number of lives he touched, but also by how he handled life - the good and the bad. I am truly blessed for having known him.

Coach Bellard made an enormous impact on the development of young men through his work as a football coach, this is true. He impacted young women, in his role at Westfield High School in Houston, as well. I know, I was one of them. He greeted me every morning as I walked from the swimming pool to class and we would chat about life, how I was swimming, or what I was working on in school ever so briefly. In those moments, he modeled for me the spirit of graciousness, hard work, and believing in yourself- what athleticism and sport are all about. I should have gone back and told him what I accomplished, in part because of what he had said to me in a matter of seconds each day in high school. Rest in peace, Coach Bellard, and thank you.

May the Family have peace knowing that Coach Bellard touched so many lives on his journey. I was blessed to have played under his direction from 1975-1979. He constantly worked hard to break barriers and to make a difference for his players. He did his best to keep us motivated and failure was not an option with him.He had my Grandama (Tommie Lee White) coaching in front of the T.V. just as hard as he coached on the field. THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Coach Bellard blessed our family in 1972 when he brought us to College Station. Being that I was 13 at the time, my brother 10, we had no idea of the impact his decision to hire our father to his coaching staff would have on all our lives and we will be forever thankful. His family and friends are a testament to the type of man he was as well as his love and excellence as a coach of football and the game of life.

Coach Bellard is a West Texas legend for his stint in Breckenridge. His small-town team routinly defeated juggernaut big-city teams like Abilene High and Wichita Falls. He was a heck of a coach and a heck of a man. The world will be a lesser place without him.

I always knew Coach Bellard was a good man, even though I only saw him coach one yr at AM in 78, my freshman yr. But through the yrs and many of the posts, comments and articles about Coach, I have learned he was very well respected by many, both Horns & Ag's. That unto itself says a lot.
So, if there is someone you really appreciate, call and tell them what they mean to you as much as you can now. I am sure that would be a lesson Coach would teach. Coach Bellard is with the Main Coach now, no more penalties ever again, it's always 1st & goal.

I guess you could say that Bellard put Texas on the football map. He helped turn an average Texas team into a national powerhouse, then he took over the Aggies and coached them to 3 bowl games. Those accomplishments, along with his high school coaching greatness, puts Bellard near the top of our State's coaching elite. He sounds like he was a great person to be around and he will be missed by Aggies and Horns alike.

God rest Emory and comfort his loved ones. His wishbone beat my Razorback team in the "Game of the Century" in '69, and more power to them. RC Slocum, in the obituary, talks about his contribution to recruiting black players to Texas college football, and I can state from personal, if accidental, first hand knowledge that he did do so. Heard him do it with my own ears in 1975 or '76, and I thought then that few would try to take on the taboo. Well done, Coach.

Never met Coach Bellard. Just seen him while coaching on TV and in the papers. I always thought he was a classy man, great coach and mentor. Has earned and deserves high praise from all players and spectators. Emory will be missed. Rest in Peace and God Bless him and his family.

I am very proud of the fact that I worked for Coach Bellard for two years in San Angelo. He was a great example to the players and fellow coaches for his knowledge and organizational skills. He will be missed, but certainly not forgotten.

great guy and great coach.. He brought respect to MSU and was an outstanding teacher. MSU was and is a tough place to coach football and he did a good job.. I am sorry for his loss and will remember him fondly especially when he beat #1 Bama in Jackson..

What a great man, not only in football, but as a teacher of life to so many pupils. My sympathies go to his family and dear friends. My father, Sonny Myers knew Mr. Bellard. He will be glad to have a "Coach" join him in Heaven. God Bless.
Sincerely,

In 1980, Coach Bellard was at Mississippi State. That year in Jackson,Ms they played Alabama coached by Paul "Bear" Bryant. Alabama had won 28 games in a row and was ranked # 1 in the country. Mississippi State won 6-3 in what is probably their all-time greatest win. Coach Bellard sure made a lot of people in Mississippi happy that day, including me. Mississippi State fans are truly saddened by the death of Coach Bellard

I will always remember my friend and coach. He always got the best out of me. He was a proud AGGIE and a great coach. I last saw him at the Angelo Football clinic in June of 2010. He always said positive things to me and he helped me in my coaching carreer. Prayers to the family!! You were my hero, coach.

Coach Bellard changed football with his invention of the wishbone. A lot of the great teams of the 70's ran the bone. Alabama, Oklahoma and Texas were among them. God bless the Coach's family and friends during this time of grief.
