Tom and the entire Nolan family,
I am so sorry to hear about Jack's passing. Like many of the people who have signed this guest book, I have many fond memories of Mobbs Road and the Nolan Shoe store. Jack and Betty always made me feel like one of the family. Sometimes that was a good thing other times not. The entire Nolan clan was a blast to be around. Jack and Betty Nolan were the foundation of that great family. He will be missed.

When they made Jack they broke the mold. Actually they made two of him but not exactly alike. I did not grow up in Auburn so i have no wonderful memories of the store, but i do have a few things i learned from Jack. First, selling shoes is really important -we all need them and devoting your life's work to giving people something the truly need, as opposed to things they think they need, is a blessing.
Second, you have to stay on your edges on hardpack. I 5kied behind Jack on Elysian Fields many times and he always did better than i did.
Third, "Minnie the Mermaid" is a great tonic to pick you up:"...down there below the corals, she corrupted all my morals". i truly wish i had a recording, but i guess i will have to be satisfied with replaying his rendition in my head.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of your Dad, Jack. I can still remember him fitting me for my school shoes more than 35 years ago! My children loved going to Nolan's as well! Please know you all are in my thoughts and prayers!

Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. He was a wonderful man and so friendly. As a kid I loved to go to the shoe store to see Buster Brown and the merry-go-round. Mom always gave her kids and grandkids shoe gift certificates for Christmas. It was great to get nice shoes!

Dear Betty, Mary Jo, Paul, Tom, Ed, Mike and Jim and all of your families: my heart sank when I heard of Jack's passing. What a terribly sad loss for you, our extended Nolan family, and the whole Auburn community. Jack was such a wonderfully funny, kind and generous man - always ready with a joke or a warm hug. Every time I saw him, his smile and twinkling eyes made me smile. I will always remember how he and Bob came to pay their respects when my grandparents, Ed and Jeanne Nagle, each passed away. I'm so sorry about the death of Jack. Along with most Auburnians, I also have many fond memories of Jack and Nolan's Shoe Store.
I'll never forget the nice conversations we had throughout the years that I worked at HSBC Bank. He was a great person, and never missed a day without stopping at my desk to say "hi".

We were shocked and sadened to receive Mike's e-mail this evening. Seems at once like yesterday and then an eon ago since we had the opportunity to visit with Jack and Betty on another sad day in Glens Falls. Although we left Auburn many years ago we always made it back to Auburn for our children and grandchildren to get their first pair of walking shoes at Nolan's, such a child friendly store! It was a sad day when the store closed, but an even sadder day now. May God bless your family.

I remember Nolan's shoe store well, the memories I too have of riding the Buster Brown Merry-Go-Round. And I'm lucky to have known Jack in recent years, being the "adopted" staff member at Dr. Ed's office. Jack popping in the front door, ALWAYS with a smile and a hello to me!! So sorry to hear of Jack's passing. Jack and Bob set the standards for living their love for their families, their community and its residents. They set the bar high for the rest of us. Their Mini Mall with great customer service was the flagship of Downtown Auburn. My siblings and I, my two daughters and my oldest grandson hold wonderful memories of the Buster Brown balloons and the horse-go-round, and of course the new shoes! MaryJo- & the entire Nolan Family- I will never ever forget my childhood as it was a tradition to go to Nolan's on Saturday for shoes, a balloon and ride the horses in the window- Buster Brown and Nolan go hand in hand for me - I was fortunate enough to be able to bring both of my children when they were small to you for that same memory, although it was not as long of a tradition for them as for me, they still remember it- you're a special family and I am sorry for your loss. Mrs Nolan your Pumpkin Roll recipie that you gave Mary Jo for my Mom on the playground at BT is a thanksgiving tradition of ours too- everytime we make it we think of you and your family! You touched many lives- and made many memories for my family- thank you!!
