Reed Benson Obituary

1928 ~ 2016
Reed Amussen Benson, age 88, passed away peacefully in his home on August 24, 2016 surrounded by his family. Reed was born January 2, 1928, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Ezra Taft Benson and Flora Smith Amussen Benson.
In his youth Reed developed a passionate love for scouting, ping-pong and poetry. He became an Eagle Scout at age 15. He graduated from East High School and went on to be freshman class president at Brigham Young University where he was voted "Friendliest Man on Campus." He earned his bachelor's degree in Political Science and History. He later earned a master's in Communications and a doctorate in Education, also from BYU. He wrote one of the nation's first dissertations on homeschooling and was a determined advocate for and pioneer of the homeschool movement.
Reed was devoted to God, country, and family. As a young man Reed served a mission in the British Isles then extended to serve with his brother Mark in the Eastern States Mission. He further served in capacities all over the world, including as a member of the Oxford, England Branch Presidency, as a member of the Jerusalem, Israel District Presidency, as President of the Washington D.C. Stake Mission, as the Northern Virginia Director of Seminaries and Institutes, and as President of the Kentucky, Louisville Mission. Reed also served as a High Councilman, a Seminary Teacher and as a Temple Worker, and in many other church callings. When asked what words of wisdom he would offer, Reed responded simply, "Keep the faith!"
Reed was an Air Force Chaplain during the Korean War. He was also appointed Confidential Assistant to the National Veterans' Administrator. He spent many years writing for national news magazines, lecturing widely on civic and political matters, and giving numerous television interviews and press conferences.
Reed was married to his sweetheart, Mary May Hinckley, for 58 years. They are the parents of nine children: Holly, E. Taft, Heidi (deceased), Heather Stephenson (Mark), Lucilla Rhees (Ryan), M. Mark (Kristen), Joshua, Lynna Stewart (Jared), and Sarah Peterson and the grandparents to 32 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Reed spent his career doing what he loved most: teaching. He was a professor of Ancient Scripture at BYU for 25 years and had the privilege to teach approximately 30,000 students. Through his work Reed was able to share his profound devotion to the Gospel, his passion for the Book of Mormon and his love for his students.
Reed will be remembered most as a devoted son, a nurturing brother, an adoring husband, a gentle father, a playful grandfather, a gifted teacher, a lover of truth and the world's best teller of jokes. When asked how he was doing, Reed always responded that he was "better now that you're here." Those who knew him felt the same.
We express our deep gratitude to Reed's sweet hospice care-givers Robyne Peabody, Melissa Ford, Alfonso De La Cruz and Nancy Trapnell for their compassionate and loving care.
A viewing will be held at Nelson Family Mortuary (4780 N University Ave, Provo) on Wednesday August 31, 2016 from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2016 in the Pleasant View Chapel (650 Stadium Ave, Provo) at 11 a.m. There will be a viewing from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services. Its 3:10am. I havent thought about Brother Benson for many many years. I just had a dream of him in the celestial kingdom. He was smiling and said what he always did when he saw me in his book of morman class. Hows my tall drink of water? It brought tears to my eyes. Its been 40 years since I saw him and I will never forget his kindness. I looked him up tonight and realized he had passed on. What a great man!!

We express our since condolences to Brother Benson's family and friends. We never knew him personally, but do know his sister, Beth, very well and love her so much. Because we know what a wonderful person Beth is, we know, too, that Reed was warm and had a great enthusiasm for the Gospel and all people around him. May God bless you all now and forever.

What a great man of God. I appreciated his warmth and enthusiasm. As I cared for both of his parents, he was always friendly, gracious and kind. His support of homeschooling gave me the courage I needed as a young mother to school my children at home. What a great journey it has been! I am so grateful for his encouragement and faith. Blessings to his dear family.

Reed was big brother to my friend Beth and he was always kind and fun. However, my most cherished memory was his enthusiasm for life and his strong, deep testimony of Jesus Christ. As a teenager, this made a big impression and helped develop my love for the Gospel.

I always enjoyed watching him talk in sacrament meeting, (our families were together in the Washington Ward), or in a fireside. He would express himself with his hands and his fingers would be in a wide "V" split. And then there was his BIG smile!

He radiated love for Jesus Christ through serving others. I am grateful for his life, teachings, and example.

As one of his missionaries, I was very thankful for the positive influence of Pres. Reed Benson on my life. He was a devoted leader.

I enjoyed the visit of several months ago to see him in the Benson home. My love and support to you Sister Benson and all your dear family.

It is impossible to underestimate the impact of Reed Benson on the homeschooling community. In the early days it was social suicide to homeschool. I had friends whose bishops were telling them to put their kids in school. I had it better than the generation before me that pioneered and today's homeschoolers are accepted as making a good choice just as public and private schools are good choices for families. Without Reed Benson this could have taken at least another generation.
My kids are all grown and I am helping out with the excellent schools of Weber County. These good people support all school choices and I am happy to see how much the educational climate has improved.

My condolences to the Benson family. God bless you all. Many memories of spiritual times and enlightenment during my service in Kentucky with you all. Most notable are the memories while attending "staff" meetings with President Benson while serving in the office on Eastern Parkway. I learned a great deal from this wonderful servant of God.
