Christine Beattie Obituary

Beattie, Christine
1965 - 2018
Dr. Christine Elizabeth Beattie, age 53, passed away on May 28, 2018 after a two-year battle with cancer. She was born on January 2, 1965 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. She is preceded in death by her husband Dr. Paul Dean Henion, and is survived by her mother and father, Roberta (Henry) and Robert Beattie, sons Sam and Neil Henion, sister Linda Roenbaugh, brother Mark and his wife Kelly, brother Eric, loving partner Dr. Stephen J. Kolb, nieces Macey, Jennifer, Sarah and Tessa, nephews Scott and David, mother-in-law Nancy Henion, and brother-in-law Scott Henion along with countless colleagues and friends around the world. Christine taught her sons to persevere through adversity by example and was a passionate and loving mother to Sam and Neil. In addition, she loved to travel (she spent her 50th birthday in the Amazon), to run (she was a top 5 age grouper), to compete (she completed a Half Ironman), to spend summers at the family cottage in Canada, and to lead her successful research program. Christine was a Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at The Ohio State University for twenty years and expert in neurodevelopmental biology and motor neuron diseases where she made important contributions to our understanding of motor neuron biology. She obtained her B.A. in Chemistry and earned her Ph.D. in Neuropharmacology at Case Western Reserve University. She then received postdoctoral training at the University of Oregon in the laboratory of Dr. Judith Eisen. Despite all of those degrees, Christine was a blast to be around! And in her too short life, she cultivated a rich garden of devoted friends and loves. The family wishes to thank all during Christine's illness for their support, including the nurses, doctors and staff at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the International Dyslexia Association (www.dyslexiaida.org). A memorial celebrating her life will be held on June 19, 2018 at the Franklin Park Conservatory Grand Atrium, 1777 E. Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43203 from 6-10 p.m. with a short memorial service at 7 p.m. Please visit www.schoedinger.com to share a special memory or to extend condolences. I am so saddened when hearing this from a prior colleague. Paul and Christine were so kind to me and my family when I was a fresh graduate student at the MCDB program. They even organized a baby shower for my son. Christine was always the magnet to keep people fun together while pursuing hardcore research. My condolences to the family! Best wishes to Sam and Neil.

Chris and I became friends before we even started kindergarten. We had so many fun times together. Like sledding down the hill in winter and the family taking me with them to swim at pineway . Those memories will live on forever. I love you Chris, be with the angels in heaven.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Beattie, Mark and family, I am so very sorry to hear about the loss of your sweet Christine. I have such fond memories of her early in life when she'd share her dreams of doing great things with her brilliant mind. As I read about her life, I see that she certainly accomplished so much more than she probably ever imagined. But gone way too soon. I'm so sorry. You all will be in my prayers and I'll be thinking of you during this difficult time.

A memory:
I was so happy when Christine joined the Neuroscience faculty of Ohio State University. She was willing to help my husband edit his grants and papers. She was a courageous woman!
Our condolences to her family and all those lucky enough to have known her. Christine is sorely missed.
In sorrow,

Christine will forever be an inspiration to her many scientific colleagues, especially the many junior scientists she mentored. I grieve for the loss to our community, for her family and friends, and especially for the many female colleagues alike (including me!) who cherished her as a generous role model who conducted her life with grace and passion. She will be deeply missed.

While reading about her, I see that Dr. Christine E. Beattie was quite a lady, very accomplished. May the many thoughtful expressions of sympathy prove to be a source of strength to all who knew and loved her.

Christine was positive and passionate about everything she did. She was an amazing mom and advocate for her sons. She was a curious and dedicated scientist. She had a great mind and used it for good. She will be so missed by so many. Please accept my deepest condolences.
