Walter Krout was my neighbor and friend. His passing is sad and tragic, as they do not build men like Walter anymore. I would describe him best as a “character.” I knew him to be a proud and humble man with grit that would prevail one way or another. In the few years I was fortunate to know him, the only thing I ever knew Walter not to be good at was asking for help, but he was terrific at giving it. I suspect I will never meet another man in his mid 80’s that replaced the transmission in his truck in his backyard with a tree and a come along. At 88, his mind was sharp as a tack and was still welding and fixing whatever needed fixed. Walter was indeed something. You could spend hours talking with him and every conversation learn something insightful that made you laugh, smile, and learn. We will all miss you very much, Walter. You made a big difference in this world and lived with a presence that cannot be replaced. I am proud to have called you my friend Walter and I promise you will never be forgotten. So go on my friend, be with your fellow Seabee’s who are waiting “Construimus Batuimus”

We knew Walter for many of years.
The white horse diner, he has gone to forever.
Waited on for many years.
Was always nice to see a friendly face.
He will be missed dearly.
He told many of old good times.

Uncle “Purse” ( Walter ) was a larger than life character. As a kid growing up he didn’t come by our house often but when he did it was memorable. He was a crusty dude with a sailors vocabulary. I remember using a “bad” word once and being asked where I learned that. With my honesty of youth I said Uncle Purse says it. I never did find out why they called him Purse. They all had interesting names for each other. Later he became Walter Leon when my mom talked about hm. He was a good brother. When Mom died I remember him saying “ now that Etsy (Flo) is gone he’s the last one. He will always be in my memories. To those who looked out for him these past years thank you.
