Richard Blood Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 10, 2001.
His City Ever Since
Rick Blood grew up in Williamsburg, Va., but his heart always belonged to New York City. As a teenager, he hung subway maps on his bedroom wall and played a New York version of Monopoly.

For his 13th birthday, he asked his parents for a trip to the city. He liked it so much that he spent his next three birthdays here. "He always loved subways and trains," said his father, Richard Blood. "He just thought that this would be the place to be."

At 36, Rick Blood had made a place for himself in one of the city's landmarks as an insurance broker at the Aon Corporation. He and his wife, Kris, were raising two children, Michael and Madeline, in Ridgefield, N.J. But every workday, he would eagerly head into the city again. Not even the crowds, the noise and the World Trade Center bombing in 1993 could scare him away.

Thinking of the Blood family on this day.

Drew DeNardo

September 11, 2023

I did not know Richard Jr., but I worked with Richard Sr. (a.k.a. Dick) at Reuters in Norristown, PA. On the fateful day I was in the kitchen with Dick at work watching the events unfold on TV, when he turned to me and said "My son works there." Up until that moment, the events we were watching seemed surreal. Once he said that, however, I was gutted and honestly I cried. I went to find our VP to send him home. When I think back to September 11, 2001 I think of two moments: standing in the kitchen with Dick, and when I first saw and was able to hold my infant daughter later that afternoon.

Whenever I'm in Ocean City, NJ I stop by the bench in Rich Jr.'s memory and think about the Blood family.

Rick: As we approach 20 years since you left us, I can still picture Kris, you and me on the river tubing trip, eating appetizers after happy hour, and visiting at your house in Baltimore with my Dad before we went to the game. I reconnected with Kris and we exchanged stories of our days with Rick and caught up on the kids. Keep watching over your family and know that you are missed.

Gone but never forgotten

It seems like a million years ago when you came into the conference room and said 'we are evacuating" Since we were in an interior room with no windows we were not aware of the first plane hitting Tower One. Through luck or divine intervention I made it to the lobby when the second plane hit.

Thank you

I too, never met Richard M. Blood, but I know his father well, and want to add my thoughts and wishes. As dispicable as the 9/11 event was, and devastating to all the families involved, I can only hope that somehow it will contribute to the bonding of the diverse groups of the world, not polarize them further. If I had to do it over again, International Relations would be my path.

Thinking of you and your family from your neighbors in Williamsburg~

January 30, 2012

To The Family,
I never had the pleasure of meeting Richard M. Blood Jr. but I still would like to offer my deepest thoughts of sympathy to you. In reading the obituary we learn that "Rick" was fascinated with New York City. When the Son of God, Jesus Christ, awakens him from the deep sleep of death, Rick will be fascinated again as he experiences living in a system of things where there will be no terrorist attacks or any evil of any sort. He will have the precious opportunity of being brought to perfection and living forever. As Jesus said, "if we have faith the size of a mustard grain nothing is impossible for us." I am so sorry for your loss.

Sincerely,
Mr. Terry of NC

To Richard's family. This morning at our church (Solano Calvary Chapel) we were given name tags to wear of those that we lost at 9/11. I was given Richard's name. I came home and got on my computer to find out who he was. Now I have a face and a story to the name I wore today. It made me cry, but filled me with hope and love. To know that he saw others to safety before himself, just humbles me. I reminds me of Jesus and how he put others before His needs. May God watch over all of you, and know that you will see Richard again. God bless you.

Dear family and loved ones of Richard M. Blood Jr.

At the end of mass yesterday at St. Eudes catholic church in Chatsworth, California, the parish gave out wristbands of each of the names of the victims from 9/11, and we were asked to especially pray for the name we drew. I drew Richard's name abd am wearing the band today and praying for you and yours, wishing you peace and comfort. God Bless you now and always.
