Herbert Oscar Wilkinson

Herbert O. Wilkinson, 83, passed away April 29, 2016, at Sunny View Care Center. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday May 3, 2016 at First Church of Christ (310 NW Ash, Ankeny). A visitation will be held Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m., also at the church. Herb was born in Winterset, IA on March 11, 1933, the son of Alvie and Laura Wilkinson. After graduating from Winterset High School in 1952, he and his twin brother, Hubert, joined the Navy and served together during the Korean War. Herb married the love of his life, Rachel Feagins, on January 1, 1961. For over 35 years, Herb worked as a diesel mechanic in the Des Moines area. After retiring, he enjoyed camping at Saylorville, the Iowa State Fair, fixing things around the house, but most of all entertaining his grandkids. Herb lived his final three years at Sunny View where his ornery grin and goofy antics won the hearts of many of the staff and residents. Herb will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 53 years, Rachel, and his four children, Monte (Ann) Wilkinson of Lexington, KY, Angela (David) Hill of Ankeny, Melanie (Jeffrey) Hall of Urbandale and Rod (Amy) Wilkinson of Ankeny; 12 grandchildren: Bailey, Natalie, Olivia, Claire, Amelia, Macy, Wesley, Bryce, Elyse, Lindsay, Andrew, and Lucas; siblings, JoAnn Benson, Sharon Stark and Hubert Wilkinson. Memorial contributions may be directed to Ankeny First Church of Christ or Sunny View Care Center Activity Fund.
