Weston - Susan K. DiMartino battled pancreatic cancer for nearly three years. Throughout her journey, she was an inspiration to her family and her many friends in Weston and throughout Boston. Susan is survived by her husband of 45 years, Arthur" Buzz" DiMartino; her children, Paul A. DiMartino of Minneapolis, Julia C. DiMartino of Boston, and A. Laurie DiMartino of Cambridge. She passed onto the Lord in peace surrounded by love at home on Tuesday, December 12, 2017. She was 70. Susan's legacy is her indomitable, effusive spirit and positive attitude; even in the face of pancreatic cancer she was encouraging to all. By many, she was considered a "most inspiring cancer patient", who remained elegant, feisty and engaged throughout her final journey. Susan was born in Vincennes Indiana, a daughter of the late Bruce Carr Kixmiller and Annabelle Gardner (Clark) Kixmiller. Raised in Washington, DC, she lived most recently in Weston, MA, for 32 years. Susan's priority was to be a loving wife and mother. In a grade school project, her son described her: "she has brown hair, blue eyes, and a heart of gold." Susan and Buzz were happily married for 45 years, enjoying hospitality at home and traveling. One of Susan's favorite mottos was: "treat family like company and company like family." Other survivors include her brother, David B. Kixmiller and his wife, Wendy of Menlo Park, California and her sister, Margaret Vickers and her husband, Dr. Martin Vickers of Augusta, Maine; her sister-in-law, Janet Foreman of Greensboro, North Carolina; nieces & nephews. Susan was Director of Children's Ministries at Trinity Church Copley Square under Rev. Sam Lloyd. Susan's enthusiasm helped to establish a new direction for Trinity by recruiting volunteer teachers and initiating vibrant, comprehensive programs for children and youth: where they enrolled 346 children on Sundays and in outreach programs! Susan was blessed to be a full-time mother and was very involved in her local community of Weston and its schools, as well as in Junior League of Boston, and the Art in Bloom Program at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Over the years, she served on the boards of Weston Educational Enrichment Program, Rombas France and Porto Alegre Brazil International Student Exchange Program, Connection Ecumenical Youth Ministry for teens, Weston Garden Club, Host Committee for the yearlong celebration of Weston's 300th Anniversary, and of course Brownie and Girl Scout Leader! Susan was also active in many volunteer programs and especially enjoyed "getting the job done". Susan volunteered for 5 years in the Early Intervention Infant and Toddler Program at Perkins School for the Blind. This wonderful program kept her grounded and grateful as she worked with the toddlers, as well as in-service training for professionals from 65 countries. She also volunteered in the Love Lane Special Needs Equine Therapy program; how she loved working with these children and the horses! Susan enjoyed greatly meeting with friends and planning her 45th reunion from Wheaton College and her 50th reunion at Mount Vernon Seminary, Washington, D.C. Susan graduated from Wheaton College in 1969 with a BA in Psychology. Recently, Susan took on a new mission, as a patient diagnosed and living with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. With a fighting spirit, filled with grace, love, hope and faith, she inspired all to always move onward. Her positive attitude has shown many a way for joyful living in spite of cancer. She proudly made her second Lustgarten Walk for Pancreatic Cancer Research in October. With her Susan's Solemates Team, they raise $30,000 to fund their research. Susan was especially thankful to her extended "care team" during these past 3 years including: the "Weston Dinner Angels", the chemo nursing group and doctors at The Tucker Gosnell Cancer Center at MGH, the Interventional Radiology Department at MGH, and her Susan's Solemates. Susan always thanked God for the precious gift of time, allowing her to savor the best in life: family and friends, while embracing faith and prayers. Family and friends will honor and remember Susan's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street, (Rt. 20) Waltham, on Friday, January 5, 2018 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Her Funeral Service will be celebrated on Saturday morning, January 6th in Trinity Church, Copley Square, 206 Clarendon Street, Boston at 11 a.m. (parking available in adjacent Back Bay parking garage on Clarendon Street). Burial in Linwood Cemetery, Weston is private. In lieu of flowers donations may be offered to Trinity Boston Foundation 206 Clarendon Street, Boston, MA 02116 https://trinityinspires.org/; or Dr. David Ryan, The Tucker Gosnell Center for Gastrointestinal Cancers, Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, Development Office, 125 Nashua Street, Suite 540, Boston, MA 02114-1101 https://giving.massgeneral.org/donate/t1/

I met Buzz And Susan about three years ago. They're both wonderful people, but Susan exuded love like no one I have ever known! I only knew her for a short time yet she touched my heart with love so completely that I can never forget her! I am so thankful to God for being able to share her kind of pure love for even just the short time I did! That love will live forever in my heart! Ken Sutton

I will always be in awe of the enthusiasm that my dear friend Susan exuded. She made any room light up. Even with the darkest of news regarding her health, she remained upbeat, put on a smile and brought joy to her friends and family. She set a remarkable example for all. She will be sorely missed by her many friends and organizations who do loved her and appreciated her very significant efforts on their behalf.

Although I've known Buzz for most of my life--we went to elementary school together, I only remember meeting Susan in 2014 at the 50th Wantagh High School reunion. She must have been ill at the time, but I never would have guessed.

We had a nice conversation, and I walked away feeling good about her and our few moments together, and happy that Buzz had such a wonderful wife. That's how sweet and charming a person she was, to have affected me this way in just a few minutes.

My thoughts are with Buzz and the children and all of Susan's friends and relatives. May she rest in peace.

Dear Buzz, your kids, and Susan's family,
I am a classmate of Buzz's from Wantagh High School and only met Susan briefly at the last class reunion. But, in our brief encounter, she struck me as a kind and loving individual who I wish I had known better. Having lost my wife who was also my high school sweetheart to cancer, I think I am qualified to have a pretty good idea of what you and the whole family are going through. I just wish you and the family loving memories of this wonderful wife, mom, and daughter. My tears, thoughts, and prayers are with you all.

Your friend, Ron (Ronnie)

I have known Susan for almost as long as I can remember. The big sister of my dear friend, David, she was a memorable part of my teen years. Her fight over the last two and a half years was a reflection of her strong faith and personality and, for me, is a guiding light as to how to handle oneself in adverse times. Sue Kits will be sorely missed. My prayers to Buzz and all the DiMartino family...

I met Susan only once on the Boston Library steps at Justine's wedding and knew right away that she was a fellow Christian; she exuded love joy and warmth, and had a light behind her eyes that spoke volumes. She sent kind and encouraging emails to me when my husband George died in 2014. I just wish I had got to know her better.

Buzz ... sincere condolences to you and your family over Susan's loss. This sad news came as such a shock to us. We so enjoyed getting to know her better during our last WHS reunion during the small gathering hosted by Nancy and John. The photo in your gallery showing the "Enter Smiling" sign on the door at your home seems to me to have captured her personality perfectly.

Sincerely, Gordy and Diana

Dear Buzz, Julie, Laurie and Paul,

We met Susan in 1973 while working at the Annenberg School of Communications and then reconnected in 1n2 years later after we had both moved to Weston. Since then we have shared many fabulous Thanksgiving dinners (and you all know what a fabulous cook Susan was) and our children became Turkey Buddies for life. For all the times we spent together, we all will remember forever Susan's Attitude of Gratitude.

Love, Carlie, Tom, Alyson and Stephanie

Dear Buzz, Julia, Laurie and Paul,

Another saint in heaven - but a loss for all of us. Susan literally changed the course of my faith-life when she invited me to teach the kindergarten church school class at Trinity so many years ago. What a truly wonderful woman who will live on in many memories.

My condolences to all of you,

Dear Buzz and Susan's family,

I was in the class behind Susan at Mount Vernon Seminary. I remember her as beautiful, gracious, vivacious and engaging. I spoke with her at my 2016 50th MVS reunion and found her battle inspiring. What a lovely tribute her obituary was. My heart goes out to you all.

My heart skipped a beat and a deep sadness descended when Susan's name was read on Sunday at Trinity during the Prayers of the People.
It was a fitting place to learn of her passing. Trinity is the place where we met so many years ago when our children and the children's programs at Trinity were young. She contributed so much - a talented leader, energetic, faithful, and kind.
Buzz, Paul, Julie and Laurie, my prayers are with you and your entire family as I remember the life of a wonderful woman.
Love and Peace, Leslie Colburn

I had the absolute delight of knowing Susan first through children and Weston, then later at Trinity Church where we all worship. What a gift to us all. She will always inspire me when I have something tough to battle about how to face a challenge squarely, deal with it, and build faith and courage in others. You, Susan, and your family have been a gift to us.

I had the absolute pleasure of having Susan as a student in a mat Pilates class I taught in Weston several years ago. Later, she contacted me about private instruction, and I met with her a few times before her treatment schedule and other commitments important to her (and she had many!) made it difficult for us to coordinate calendars.

Although I didn't know Susan intimately, her fortitude, optimism, warmth and sheer determination were apparent. I've carried that memory of her since that time, and although we'd lost touch, I often recalled those characteristics in her that I hoped I could find within myself.

May she rest in peace.

Oh my goodness, I just learned of Susan's passing today (her birthday) and hadn't even known she was sick. I am in shock. I have so many happy memories of Susan from our time together at Trinity Church, and am so grateful to have been her partner and friend in ministry for ten years. I am in shock! What a wonderful, cheerful, giving, kind and generous soul. She was such an inspiration in so many ways - always raising the standards in kindness, fidelity, humility and goodness. I had had a dream about the DiMartinos back in October and had tried to re-connect via Facebook; I wish I had called the house to confirm contact. I would have liked to tell Susan how often I think about her, and with such fondness and respect. My heart goes out to Buzz, Paul, Julie, and Laurie. I send you all my love. I'll see you on the 5th and 6th. With a broken yet grateful heart I wish Susan a very Happy Birthday, and I send all my love! Many Blessings, Rob Bacon

I am one of many of Buzz's Kappa Sigma fraternity (at Brown University) Brothers. I never met Susan, but thru Buzz's animated, loving talk of and about her, I do know her. Permit me,

"Susan was not of this world, she was too good for it. Perhaps, that is why she left it. But in doing so, she left so many so sad".

May she rest in Peace.
