On March 5, 2018, Rev. William "Bill" Durward Gregory, 86, of Charleston, SC went home to his Heavenly Father, whom he served faithfully. A service of celebration will be held Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. in the Chapel at Bishop Gadsden, One Bishop Gadsden Way. The family will be receiving guests following the service. Bill was born and raised in Tuskegee, AL, where he received the call to Christian Music ministry during his freshman year of college. He is a graduate of both the University of Alabama and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Bill served Southern Baptist churches in Texas, Virginia, Maryland and South Carolina serving 22 years at Ashley River Baptist Church in Charleston, SC. Following his retirement from full-time ministry, he served several local churches in an interim capacity. In addition, he worked full-time as an Allen Organ specialist for Fox Music House for a number of years. Rev. Gregory also sang for many years with The Centurymen, a group of Southern Baptist ministers of music. He traveled with them at times including trips to China and Turkey. In his spare time he enjoyed travel, reading and was a gifted woodworker. Rev. Gregory is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jane Martin Gregory and three children: Bill (Millie) of Cary, NC, Cathy Gregory Richardson (Joe) of Charleston, SC and David (Tracy) also of Cary, NC. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Jordan, Ben, Greg, Niki and Amanda; five great-grandchildren; and a niece, Alison Gregory Edmonson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Music Ministry at Fort Johnson Baptist Church, 1473 Camp Road, James Island, SC 29412.

I was just thinking of him while driving the other day. Miss him. He was such a gentlemen and great example of what a Christian should be. Love to his family.

I just wanted to let you know I am thinking about your family and praying for you. I tell so many stories to my kids and grandchildren about my days in the youth choir with Mr. Gregory as well as my time helping Mrs. Gregory with the little kids choir. I still sing "Waddle-e-Acha" to my grandchildren. So much of my youth is tied up with your family, and though we have not spoken in years, I just wanted to let you know you are still loved.

Bill Gregory is the reason I'm in ministry...and I've been doing this for 47 years. When I was 15 years old he had me come by his office in the afternoons so he could teach me how to beat time and direct hymns. A church plant out of ARBC needed a music director and he took the time to train this 15 year old and send me over there. Here I was, 15 years and directing the adult choir. God bless those people. He was bold in his own personal support of the youth music ministry. I remember when drums were first introduced into the church (Celebrate Life I think) and at the time as a kid I knew he took grief over it but now as a pastor I can only imagine how much grief he took over it. He did not back up. What a legacy for those of us who sat under his leadership. What a blessing!! Our prayers are with the Gregorys. Love to all.

Bill Gregory's commitment to the youth of Ashley River Baptist Church was responsible for me becoming a christian. He was a great man and he will be missed.
