Edward Badgley Obituary

Published by Porter Loring Mortuary North on Jan. 7, 2020.
Edward C. Badgley died on January 7, 2020 at Brooke Army Medical Center. Ed was a private man. If you wanted to know how he felt, he would have told you, "fine." If you had asked his dear wife, she would have filled you in. Born in California to Edgar and Mary, in between older sister Patricia and younger sister Juanita, he was the middle child. Ed was often in the middle of things. It was during the Depression, yet the Badgleys were generally a chipper bunch. The family sometimes also included an interesting pet or two Ed brought home, usually without prior authorization. Master Sergeant Badgley proudly served as a medical technician in the United States Air Force. He was a founding team member of the first living tissue eye bank at Wilford Hall Hospital on Lackland Air Force Base, and a decorated veteran of Korea and Vietnam. A lifelong scholar, he read everything from Asimov to Sagan to Shakespeare, to a dog-eared copy of Build Your Own Backyard Smoker. He might pause his reading to listen to bluegrass or classical music, or to recite by heart the poetry of Coleridge or Wordsworth. He reserved his expertise on limericks and Jabberwocky for those times when he had a fishing pole in his hands or a grandchild by his side. By day as well as by night, Ed was also known as "Papa Lalo." His superpowers included, but were not limited to: smoking a perfect Sunday brisket, speaking imperfect Spanish with the aid of a beer or two, teaching his favorite Beatles fan how to change a tire on an old pickup truck, outsmarting red snapper using only bait on a fishing pole, and correctly answering 40 questions. Papa Lalo excelled at the art of pairing the proper Cabernet with salami, cheese and focaccia bread. He had a lifelong affinity for Vienna sausages on saltines as well as fried catfish and muffuletas. Papa Lalo would regale friends and family with epic tales of the damn lies of Ethel, Granny's hot beans pedicure, happy FaceTime with Jeckel, and how that turd ended up in the punch bowl. Our hero was preceded in death by parents Edgar and Mary, sisters Pat and Juanita, nephew David and son-in law Charles Botkin. He is survived by his beloved wife Maria, son Michael and his wife Julie Badgley; daughter Teresa Botkin; daughter Frances and husband Alfred Carnot; and daughter Delores and husband Craig Dinsmore. He was especially proud of his grandchildren Jean Botkin and husband Steve Espinosa; Alfred Edward Carnot; Michelle Badgley; Michael Badgley and wife Caroline Sheridan; and Jessica Badgley and husband Thomas Haubrick. He passed along his superpowers to great grandchildren Tera and Kera Espinosa and Dorian Sheridan Badgley. Ed cherished his nieces and nephews Robert and Diana, Alan and Elizabeth, Nancy and Bucko, Sue and Ron, and Jorge and Denise. Among his closest friends were Marvin and Elizabeth, Big Dave, Mei Lin, Benjamin and Chelsea, and Blake. These are only a few of the many family and friends Ed loved. Sincere thanks to the outstanding medical staff at BAMC. The Dude Abides. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project or Project Mend. He would have thought this short story a bit long, so in conclusion: your brilliant mind and beautiful heart made this little world a bigger and better place, Edward. You were my inspiration My hero My friend On the highway of time May I meet you again. I grew up across the alley from the Badgley's. Ed and my dad enjoyed going on several fishing trips. I was able to join them a few times. He really enjoyed fishing and having a few beers. Edward always had a smile and friendly words. A very friendly soul. May he Rest In Peace.

Before ever meeting Ed, I knew he was a legend and a father who was worshiped by his family. His daughter, Delores, is a dear friend of mine, and I always looked forward to the visits Ed and Maria would make to Salt Lake City because I knew there would be lots of laughs and great stories! Delores loves this man more than life itself and I know she will miss him always. He was such a fighter and obviously wasn't eager to leave this world, even though he suffered much. I feel privileged to have met this wonderful human being. Godspeed, Edward.

Ed will certainly be missed. We had a good time in the Eye Clinic and we worked together to help others that needed our services.
