A true giant, legend and great educator in the Respiratory Therapy Field. He will be missed. As a fellow educator I cannot think of anyone who I respect more than Bob Kacmarek. My former co-worker Troy Almeida ,who worked at the VA Palo Alto would always share his stories of interacting with him at Mass General and his cowboy boots.

It was my great honor to know Bob since the 80's. I loved and admired him as a leader, a mentor, and a friend. Bob's work influenced an entire generation of ventilators, ventilatory therapies, and therapists (me included). While his work took him to the top, his personality kept him very grounded. I will miss you always Bob!

Bob welcomed and pulled all of us from the research laboratory into his "Kacmarekian" world. His mentorship was partnership in exploration. It was not just respiratory physiology and mechanical ventilation, it was a full human journey. A true educator, mentor, hospital leader and friend.

I met Bob when he was an RT at Passavant Memorial and I was at Chicago Wesley right before they merged in become Northwestern Memorial Hospital in the early 70s. He struck me then a man who loved to learn and also have a good time. We spent many shifts working together and having a few adult beverages after. Bob was the key to the RT program at Northwestern. He assembled a very talented groups of instructors and a rigorous curriculum. He was always proud of the hundreds of graduates of his program as were all of us at Northwestern. He stood up at my wedding and we actually were roommates for a short time in Berwyn. He achieved his PhD while working full-time and handling many speaking engagements. When Bob moved out East to MGH, we saw each other less frequently and mostly at professional meetings. His zeal for improving the RT profession never diminished and his many publications leave an indelible mark on many who follow him. We've lost a a great champion to the field of respiratory and critical care medicine and I an old friend.

I am honored to have known Dr. Kacmarek. He was an inspiring and encouraging mentor; he never looked down on anybody and had an impact not only on the individuals he interacted with, but also in his field. I will always look to him as an example of good character, humility, and determination. He was humble and welcoming, and I will always cherish the memories I have with him at barbecues with the lab. I offer my deepest condolences to Dr. Kacmarek's family. May he rest in peace.

Dear Bob, I'm so happy to have known you. I remember the first time I arrived as a fellow at MGH. You just said " please, call me Bob, non professor". You were a real teacher for me not only because you showed your dedication and hard work for the profesion but also as a human being. Today I can say only thank you whereever you are. You will be always alive in our memory.

Sad to hear about the passing of Bob. I was in his respiratory class in 1976 and was of the finest educators I’ve ever encountered. He was also a friend when I was in Chicago. Always remember the times after a hard week of class and clinical Friday afternoons at the East inn. A great guy!!! Bob may you Rest In Peace. Until we meet again always your friend. Joe

Bob will be greatly missed. I hesitate to say that his passing is a loss to Respiratory Care Profession as he has done so much to advance the practice, scope and recognition of our profession, and expanded the horizons and our expectations of what a respiratory professional can achieve. Bob's achievements and contributions will inspire, empower and motivate clinicians and researchers for many years to come. Thank you Bob. RIP

It has been an honor to be mentored by Bob. As far as I can remember, I have only good memories of him. A giant in his field, he kept improving respiratory care and, despite his work being known throughout the world, he was humble about it and always ready to teach us ignorant fellows something new (more often, something old that we never heard about). He will be greatly missed, the world is now a bit poorer.

Bob was a brilliant scientist, clinician and educator, but more than that, he was a kind, thought and patient person. He could teach complex topics at any level, whether it be to leading critical care practitioners or to new students. At AARC, he always had time to talk with students and encourage them to work hard. Because he taught so many of us, his legacy will live on as we try to emulate what he taught us. He will be sorely missed, but never forgotten; his legacy will live on. Thank you, Bob, for all you did for so many of us.

Bob was my first introduction to Respiratory Care back in 1979/1980 as a student in his program at Northwestern. He was always a friendly, decent, helpful guy. And, in spite of all his incredible achievements, he remained a humble, approachable guy. He is gone way too soon, but will always be remembered as an icon in his field.

He has made such an indelible mark on my training in medicine and in life. Such a gift to have crossed paths.

I had the opportunity to get to know Bob Kacmarek back in the early to mid 1980s. When he would come to Texas to participate in our annual state meetings, I was always waiting in eager anticipation to visit with him. It was such a pleasure to hear him speak on any topic, but it was like "drinking from the firehose". He provided such wonderful insights to evidence-based medicine and encouraged all of us to seek answers through research.
He also had a great sense of humor. I remember once when we were sitting together with a small group of faculty and students, at a table that was dimly lit in a large hotel ballroom, that one in group had on a pair of "trick glasses". By squeezing their arm to the side of their body they were able to have water squirt from a bulb under their arm to the glasses. Their victim was none other than Bob Kacmarek. He started looking around to see where the water was coming from, laughing the whole time. When we finally told him where the water was coming from, he decided to use the glasses himself and went about squirting others. He had great fun that night. I am so sad to hear of his passing and offer my condolences, thoughts, and prayers to his family. He will be truly missed.

I was privileged to count Bob as a friend for over 50yrs. He always put patients first. Moreover, he help significantly to expand the scientific basis of respiratory care, throughout the world. Yet he always found time to to challenge the status quo, and working as a leading change agent. Bob has done a great deal to enhance the respect, credibility and value of those providing respiratory care, especially respiratory therapists. He actualized on his goals by serving in a plethora of voluntary roles above and beyond his professional responsibilities at Mass General. Bob did "seize the day", every day.
His many contributions will echo though time. May God Bless you and keep you, my friend.

I got a professor of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine after I came back to Japan. It could not be possible without him. He accepted many Japanese my younger colleagues after me. He visited Japan many times and gave us beautiful lectures. He influenced not only American but also Japanese health-care providers. I had the pleasure of meeting Bob many years ago at a lecture. I was so impressed by his love of the field and his accomplishments but more importantly by his willingness in taking time to talk any RT no matter how busy he was. He was my role model and I guess he succeeded in that as I just retired after 51 years in the field. He will be sorely missed..a true Icon. My prayers to all.

Bob Kacmarek was THE most influential respiratory therapist ever. For more than 50 years. Bob was passionate about respiratory care and, in particular, the respiratory care department at the MGH. For decades he was a worldwide ambassador for the respiratory care profession. He was always the strongest person in the room and his presence was always bigger than the room. He influenced my career like no one else. With fondness, we will be recounting stories about Bob for years to come. He will not be forgotten.

He is a loss for so many more people than we think. When critical care physicians in the world care for patients, they know that they affect their lives for the discoveries by Bob Kacmarek. Bob was responsible for having a positive effect on so many clinicians that each cared for so many lives, that his loss can be counted in tens of thousands whose lives he has affected.
