I pray that the Lord Jesus Christ touches this family with peace and love at this time of sorrow! I had the honor of working with Judge Burgess for over two decades and I considered him a dear friend! He was the definition of a true gentleman! Rest in peace my friend!

I met Charles Burgess in the mid 's while in high schoola and working at our family wholesale flooring business. Mr. Burgess knocked on the door after we were closed and asked me who he could show his seaming tape. I introduced him to my dad and watched him demo the tape and heat gun. We became his distributor and remained so after he sold his company to Roberts Consolidated. The Burgess hot melt seaming tape system remains the industry standard today.

John was a true Southern Gentleman. He made me my first mint julep ( followed by another or two) I'll always remember John's kindness at his brother-in-law Paul Sharp's memorial service. When my eyes started to well up, he quickly handed me his lovely white handkerchief. You live in my heart always, dear man

Beverly & Family,
My prayers are with you and the family. I guess he and Simpson are having a cocktail telling old Delta Tau Delta and family stories, along with Wiley & Henry. We had a number of great memories at the Carter House especially during the Christmas season. My love to you and John and the family.
Sincerely,
Francis Clements

When I arrived in the New Orleans SSA ALJ Office as a new judge in 2008, I was fortunate to have been given the office next to John's. He was one of the first to greet me and over the years our friendship grew and flourished. When we needed breaks we would be in each other's office commiserating about the office, the city or the world; and especially our families. Firsthand I witnessed John's work ethic and his love for his family. He was a unique combination as to what is good about a person--honest, loyal, caring, at times wickedly funny. He never bragged about himself and was humble. He did his job and served the public and his community. I'd say that's a pretty good combination.
Ironically, he told me that when he was a newly minted lawyer, his first court appearance was before one of my family members--Judge Anzalone, my grandfather's first cousin. And just as Old Judge Anzalone had been kind to him, John was kind to me as a new judge. karma.
Dear Beverly and Margaret, please accept Mom and my condolences. Your family is in our prayers.

What a shock when I heard about Judge Burgess's much too early death. Such a great man. Really cared about claimants and wanted to make sure they made the right choices for their life situations.
Great sense of humor as well as a brilliant legal mind. During 2020 at the height of the first Covid outbreak when things were generally tense I had two hearings back to back with him. In between hearings before the second claimant was on the telephone he said to me, "Well Mr. Sells after your first client I did not know if I should get a cup of coffee or a stiff drink." Gave us a good laugh when we needed one.
Even though we did not always have a meeting of the minds on issues I had the utmost respect for the man. Rest in peace Judge Burgess.

My dad, Lucius Patterson was Clerk of Court in Livingston Parish. He loved Mr John. He was so unlike many of the attorneys that came into the office. He was funny, kind and so helpful to all of those in need. He and daddy sat in the office and "fixed" all the troubles of times!
I would see Mr John at the Post Office in Springfield and he would take the time to ask about family and friends that we use to work with.
That is my favorite memories of Mr. John. So kind and funny.
