Brig Owens (1943–2022), Washington defensive back

Brig Owens was a legendary defensive back for the NFL’s Washington franchise who has the second most interceptions in the team’s history.

Brig Owens was a quarterback at the University of Cincinnati who was selected in the seventh round of the 1965 NFL draft by the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys converted him to safety on defense and he was traded to Washington after one season. He became a star player for Washington, helping the team reach Super Bowl VII where they lost to the Miami Dolphins. He finished his career in 1977 and has the second most interceptions in Washington history. He was elected to the team’s Ring of Fame and was selected to their best 80 players of all-time list. He was great friends with Washington tight end Jerry Smith, and the pair roomed together at training camp and on road games during the season. According to the Washington Post, they were the first interracial roommates in the NFL. After his playing career, he became a lawyer and had a role with the NFL Players Association, working for player rights.
