Bruce Guthro’s legacy
Guthro first grabbed attention with his 1997 single, “Walk This Road,” which went to No. 1 on the Canadian country charts; his second solo album, 1998’s “Of Your Son,” went to No. 6. That same year, the longtime Celtic rock band from Scotland, Runrig, was looking for someone to replace their lead singer, Donnie Munro, who left the band to pursue politics.
With Guthro providing lead vocals, Runrig produced its most successful album to date, 2001’s “The Stamping Ground.” The album continued their long run of popularity and thanks to Guthro’s ties to North America, broadened their fanbase in Canada and the United States. In 2008, they were inducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame. The band celebrated 40 years together in 2012, with Guthro still on lead vocals. When the group finally retired in 2018, he had been the lead singer on five of their albums.
Guthro was a nine-time East Coast Music Award winner, and in 1998 won the Canadian Country Music Award for Rising Star. He battled cancer for the last several years of his life.
