Calvin Jones’ legacy
After dazzling onlookers as a high school athlete, Jones followed up a stellar college career that saw him rack up over 3,000 rushing yards playing for the Nebraska Cornhuskers in a major way: by winning a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers.
Born and raised in Omaha, Jones went to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he was a standout star and an All-Big Eight pick in 1992-’93. Jones set a Big Eight freshman record when he ran for 294 yards in a game against Kansas, nabbing a team-record six touchdowns. All told, he amassed 3,166 yards and 40 touchdowns in his college career and earned Big Eight Offensive Player of the Year honors in 1992. He was inducted into the Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.
Jones was drafted in the NFL’s third round by the then-Los Angeles Raiders in 1994, with whom he spent two of his three professional years. He played 15 games for the Raiders, running for 112 yards on 27 carries. Jones went to the Green Bay Packers in 1996, playing in one game. He walked away with a Super Bowl ring after the team won Super Bowl XXXI.
