Legendary home run hitter
Allen was a feared home run hitter at the plate who was most known for his years with the Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago White Sox. He was a 7-time All-Star who hit 30 or more home runs six times. He was the rookie of the year for the Phillies in 1964 and the American League MVP for the White Sox in 1972. He hit .292 during his career with 351 home runs. While with the Phillies, Allen sometimes had to endure racial taunts from fans. Many consider him to be the best player in history to be left out of the Baseball Hall of Fame. It was believed that he was to be announced as a candidate for the Hall of Fame for 2021, but the vote has been postponed until later in December because of the pandemic.
On writers saying he should be in the Hall of Fame
“I enjoy a lot of the writings I hear from time to time, day to day, and read some awfully good writing, people that think you deserve it. I do enjoy reading them.” —Chicago Tribune
