Baseball career
Giambi played college baseball for the Cal State Fullerton Titans, helping the team to victory in the 1995 College World Series. He was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 1996, making his major league debut with the team in 1998. Giambi was traded to the A’s in 2000, where he was involved in a notable moment during the 2001 American League Division Series. As the A’s played the New York Yankees, Giambi was tagged out at home on Derek Jeter’s memorable “flip” toss. After the 2002 season, he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies and then to the Boston Red Sox. The brother of fellow MLB player Jason Giambi, he was mentioned in the 2003 book “Moneyball” by Michael Lewis, about the A’s, and he was portrayed by Nick Porrazzo in the 2011 film adaptation. Giambi was one of the first MLB players to admit to using steroids.
Giambi talks about steroids
“They’re not good for you. I think we need to reach out and let teenagers know they’re not good for your body and not good for your health. Do I ever think they’ll rid sports of it completely? No. Unless they go to the source of where they’re distributing it from, they may never get rid of it in sports. The temptation is too high.” —from a 2005 interview for the Kansas City Star
